Elon Musk, the tech entrepreneur and Tesla CEO, exchanged views on-stage with Jack Ma, Chinese billionaire and co-founder of the multinational conglomerate Alibaba Group, over the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence. There's like a name, AI, it sort of sounds a bit like love?" began Musk to which Ma amusingly replied "Yeah AI...I hate the word AI called artificial intelligence. I call it Alibaba intelligence." Both leaders had different opinions on the implications of the technology where optimistic Ma said that he didn't consider AI to be a threat, "I don't know, man, that's like, famous last words," replied Musk. According to the Tesla CEO, most people think of AI as a smart human but he said it's going to be much more than that. "It'll be much smarter than the smartest human." He further highlighted AI's capability to be much smarter than humans by saying that "the biggest mistake that I see artificial intelligence researchers making is assuming that they're intelligent.

It's a cool, breezy evening, and you are out for a run. The fitness tracker strapped to your wrist beeps. It has detected a change in your gait โ€“ forecasting a possible injury in a few weeks. AI-enabled devices like these are already possible today, said Tamsin Greulich-Smith, Chief of the Smart Health Leadership Centre. She works closely with hospitals in Singapore to help them use AI, data analytics, design thinking techniques and what she calls'human-centred design'.

How using AI can help save lives

Haidar Altaie, data scientist at SAS UK & Ireland, writes about how AI can be used to improve patient care, and ultimately save lives. Technological advancements are changing every industry and healthcare is no exception: you can argue that the value of artificial intelligence (AI) is never greater than when it's used to improve patients' conditions and even save lives. An example of how AI improves patient care is Amsterdam UMC's partnership with SAS. The project was able to clinically diagnose patients with colorectal liver cancer, the third most common cancer worldwide, using computer vision and predictive analysis. Previously, this process required manual examination which was time-consuming and subjective to the radiologist.


Government of Canada invests in Sunnybrook-led collaboration to deliver better, faster and safer health outcomes for Canadians

Network will transform Canada's image-guided therapy industry into a global leader by integrating artificial intelligence into imaging-based medical technologies The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, today announced an investment of $49 million into the Industry Consortium for Image-Guided Therapy (ICIGT), a pan-Canadian network led by Sunnybrook. "Canadians have long been at the forefront of exciting innovations in health and biosciences, and through the Strategic Innovation Fund we have brought together the best in the public and private sectors to find real health care solutions. Our investment in the ICIGT project is helping to leverage Canada's strengths in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and image-guided therapies to ultimately deliver better health care for Canadians across the country," says Bains. The network of 70 private and public sector partners will invest more than an additional $76 million, for a total project value of $126 million. It will transform Canada's image-guided therapy sector into a global leader by integrating artificial intelligence and data advances into medical technologies that use imaging to treat, diagnose and monitor disease.


Chinese face-swap app triggers privacy fears after going viral

A new Chinese app that lets users swap their faces with celebrities, sports stars or anyone else in a video clip racked up millions of downloads at the weekend but was swiftly criticised over privacy issues. The app's surge in popularity and sudden backlash from some users highlights how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies raise concerns surrounding identity verification. Zao was uploaded to China's iOS App Store on Friday and immediately went viral. According to a post from the app's makers on China's Weibo social media site, Zao's servers nearly crashed because of the deluge of traffic. According to App Annie, a firm that tracks app downloads all over the world, Zao was the most downloaded free app in China's iOS App Store as of 1 September.

Over the past few weeks, Facebook and Elon Musk's Neuralink have announced that they're building tech to read your mind -- literally. Mark Zuckerberg's company is funding research on brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that can pick up thoughts directly from your neurons and translate them into words.


Google "Machine Learning Fairness" Whistleblower Goes Public, says: "burden lifted off of my soul"

A Google insider who anonymously leaked internal documents to Project Veritas made the decision to go public in an on-the-record video interview. The insider, Zachary Vorhies, decided to go public after receiving a letter from Google, and after he says Google allegedly called the police to perform a "wellness check" on him. Along with the interview, Vorhies asked Project Veritas to publish more of the internal Google documents he had previously leaked. "I gave the documents to Project Veritas, I had been collecting the documents for over a year. And the reason why I collected these documents was because I saw something dark and nefarious going on with the company and I realized that there were going to not only tamper with the elections, but use that tampering with the elections to essentially overthrow the United States."


Using AI to Advance Science - DZone AI

On a recent trip to Accenture's Dock facility in Dublin, they showcased an AI-based tool to recommend new recipes after having crunched through thousands of existing recipes to come up with potential new flavors. Though the work is interesting, perhaps such an approach is far more interesting when applied to innovation itself. A growing proportion of innovation today is what's known as recombinative, and sees existing ideas and concepts applied in fresh and creative ways. Researchers are increasingly deploying AI-based tools to help devise some of these possible roads to explore. For instance, a recent paper from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem highlights an AI-driven approach to mine databases of patents and research papers for ideas that can be recombined into solutions for new problems.
