While AI has dominated news headlines over the past year or so, the majority of announcements and research has been around the ethics of the technology and how to manage or avoid bias in data. In April 2019, a fortnight after it was launched, Google scrapped its independent group set up to oversee the technology corporation's efforts in AI tools such as machine learning and facial recognition. The Advanced Technology External Advisory Council (ATEAC) was shut down after one member resigned and there were calls for Kay Coles James, president of conservative thinktank The Heritage Foundation to be removed after "anti-trans, anti-LGBTQ and anti-immigrant" comments, as reported by the BBC. Google told the publication that it had "become clear that in the current environment, ATEAC can't function as we wanted. We'll continue to be responsible in our work on the important issues that AI raises, and will find different ways of getting outside opinions on these topics." Volvo, Veoneer joint venture Zenuity teams up with CERN to speed up AV decision-making
Autonomous driving software specialist Zenuity will team up with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) to develop autonomous vehicles that can make predictions and decisions faster to help improve safety, the supplier said in a release. This is crucial to Zenuity as its long-term goal is to help automakers create AVs that have zero collisions and cause no injuries and fatalities. The safety of AVs has been questioned following a non-fatal accident last month in Vienna, Austria, involving a driverless bus and a pedestrian, and a fatal crash in 2018 in which an Uber Technologies self-driving test vehicle killed a pedestrian in Arizona. When asked whether those accidents were a wake-up call for Zenuity, CEO Dennis Nobelius said the supplier doesn't need to be reminded about the importance of safety. "Safety is in our bones. That's how we operate," Novelius told Automotive News Europe, adding that whenever an AV is involved in an accident it is a reminder of how high the stakes are in this sector.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot enjoyed a drive on the virtual track at a digital museum during a visit to the Bhamashah Technohub and State Data Centre. The Chief Minister was visibly impressed with the VR (virtual reality) technology and tried his hands on virtual games including football and cricket. In the "Programme Bay" area, he was accorded a warm welcome by a "dancing robot". Gehlot also clicked selfies with the children and enjoyed "samosas" with them. In the technohub, he monitored the progress of start-ups working in the domain of artificial intelligence, robotic technology, 3D printer technology and XRVR technologies.
MIT's 'roboats' autonomously form bridges across bodies of water
Need to bridge a wide pond or canal in a pinch, or perhaps a backyard pool? Robots pioneered by researchers at MIT and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute) might fit the bill. Dubbed robotic boats, or roboats, they're autonomous platforms designed to "shapeshift" at will by reassembling into different configurations. As MIT's Rob Matheson explains in a blog post, the roboats -- rectangular hulls packing sensors, thrusters, microcontrollers, GPS modules, cameras, and other hardware -- are the fruit of the ongoing Roboat joint project between MIT and the AMS Institute. Its longstanding goal is to create structures capable of ferrying goods and people along Amsterdam's over 160 canals, and of self-assembling into bridges that could help reduce pedestrian congestion.
UAE uses AI to accelerate fight against food waste
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, MOCCAE, organised a special event on Monday to highlight the role of Artificial Intelligence, AI, in tackling food waste. The event witnessed the launch of new AI-enabled product'Vision' that allows kitchens to automatically track food wastage by leveraging AI. A food tech company Winnow launched the product that aims to help chefs easily identify what items are routinely wasted and adjust their purchasing lists and menus to cut down on costs. Headed by Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment; and Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence; the event brought together leading government and private sector entities to sign the UAE Food Waste Pledge. The ministry in cooperation with Winnow, launched the pledge initiative in mid-2018.
Philips taps JD.com's AI capabilities to improve consumers experiences in-store
JD.com and technology company Philips has joined forces with the aim to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) in retail. The partnership will leverage JD's AI-driven retail solution with the aim to develop a smart marketing solution that covers product strategy, market analysis, marketing management and more. JD.com will further assist in business decision making, providing guidance on product design, marketing and advertising, user engagement, branding and store operation, among other areas. Bowen Zhou, vice president of JD.com and president of JD AI said: "With AI technology, JD is helping our partners move from marketing to many, to marketing to one, in an efficient and cost-effective way." According to JD.com, leveraging AI will enable brands like Philips to understand fine-grain nuances, such as the fact that some consumers are more attracted to product images or marketing with a more professional background, while others gravitate more towards cartoons.
