Tríona Butler Lavery is an Experience Design Lead at Google in London, working as part of the Google AI team. Previously, Tríona was based in California where she worked for over 5 years as a UX lead for Google's home products and experiences. Designing for the home meant building a deep understanding of what'home' means, understanding households, their needs and aspirations in order to define a product strategy in support of this. In her current work, she is exploring a human-centred approach to shape the next generation of AI based products and experiences. AI is spurring a paradigm shift in computing, what is the role of a designer in this new era?

The exhibition explores how technology can enhance our lives and society, and envisions a world where intelligence and technology are more integrated into our daily lives. It will look at the evolving relationship between humans and technology, and Sony will present its thoughts on the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics and its vision for life-enhancing bots. Phillip Rose, Director of Sony Design Centre Europe, said the exhibition explores "the correlation between the human condition and the onset of forward-thinking technology". 'Affinity in Autonomy' also includes an installation called'Pendulus', an interactive and engaging robotic pendulum that can detect humans. 'Pendulus' represents the independence of robotics, suggesting that humans will begin to feel an affinity towards autonomous bots.


What is Machine Behavior?

Understanding the behavior of artificial intelligence(AI) agents is one of the pivotal challenges of the next decade of AI. Interpretability or explainability are some of the terms often used to describe methods that provide insights about the behavior of AI programs. Until today, most of the interpretability techniques have focused on exploring the internal structure of deep neural networks. Recently, a group of AI researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) are exploring a radical approach that attempts to explain the behavior of AI observing them in the same we study human or animal behavior. They group the ideas in this area under the catchy name of machine behavior which promises to be one of the most exciting fields in the next few years of AI.


Planned Eric Schmidt Talk at AI Conference Draws Protest

Eric Schmidt, former CEO and chairman of Google, has donated money to Stanford University, and taught at its business school. But a group of current and former Google employees, academics, and human rights activists wants the university to cancel a talk he is scheduled to give next month at a conference on ethics and artificial intelligence. They say Schmidt is a poor ethical role model. In a letter to the conference organizers, the group says Schmidt's appearance would be inappropriate given "serious and credible" questions over his ethical conduct. Their petition was publicly released Tuesday with more than 40 signatories, including 20 current Google employees, but first sent to Stanford Sunday.

This definition may have one significant drawback -- the concept of intelligence is difficult to explain in principle. The problem of defining artificial intelligence comes down to the problem of defining intelligence in general: is it something in common, or does this term combine a set of disparate abilities, and even more as individual or even collective abilities? To what dimension can intelligence be created? Is it possible to judge the presence of intelligence only by the observed behavior? What is human intelligence and especially the intelligence of a machine or program?

In recent years, the field of machine learning (ML) has seen an incredible surge in interest. From image classifiers to board games, ML and big data and internet are making large impacts in nearly every field. Chemistry and molecular science in general are no different. ML and informatics techniques have demonstrated strong success in different aspects of chemistry. The success stories so far include, but are not limited to (a) facilitating extremely high throughput screening methods for understanding complex chemical processes and for formulating materials with desirable properties, (b) automated enhanced sampling approaches for tackling the rare event problem in classical and ab initio simulations, (c) speeding up the rational design of inhibitors for treating complex diseases.


Novel math could bring machine learning to the next level

A team of Italian mathematicians, including a neuroscientist from the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown (CCU), in Lisbon, Portugal, has shown that artificial vision machines can learn to recognize complex images more quickly by using a mathematical theory that was developed 25 years ago by one of this new study's co-authors. Their results have been published in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence. In recent decades, machine vision performance has vastly improved. Artificial systems can now learn to recognize virtually any human face or to identify any individual fish moving in a tank. Such machines are, in fact, electronic models of networks of biological neurons, and their aim is to simulate the functioning of the brain, which excels at these visual tasks without any conscious effort on our part.
