An AI system identified a potential new drug in just 46 days

The approach is based on two popular AI techniques: generative adversarial networks and reinforcement learning. The news: A team from AI pharma startup Insilico Medicine, working with researchers at the University of Toronto, took 21 days to create 30,000 designs for molecules that target a protein linked with fibrosis (tissue scarring). They synthesized six of these molecules in the lab and then tested two in cells; the most promising one was tested in mice. The researchers concluded it was potent against the protein and showed "drug-like" qualities. All in all, the process took just 46 days.

Companies are struggling with a critical problem -- finding managers with the right skills to lead their organizations. This problem not only has damaging downstream effects for businesses, but it's also hurting the global economy. An analysis by job market analytics company Burning Glass Technologies found that management skills "represent one of the biggest skills gaps in the job market" and that managers have larger skills gaps than the people they manage. The Bank of England's chief economist has argued that poor management is the principal cause of the U.K.'s stagnant productivity.


Picovoice's voice assistant promises cloud-level accuracy on edge devices

Picovoice, a Canadian company, wants to put a voice assistant that promises cloud-level accuracy onto all manner of edge devices, and even within a web browser. There are three components in the process -- a wake word, speech-to-text translation, and speech-to-intent. Picovoice previously rolled out Porcupine for wake word detection and Rhino to handle speech-to-intent, but it's now added Cheetah speech-to-text translation to complete the trio. All are available via GitHub. The stack operates in real time on-device, without an internet connection, and promises extremely low resource requirements.

At the moment, for example, art historians might bring suspect work into a lab for infrared spectroscopy, radiometric dating, gas chromatography, or a combination of tests. But now a new AI does away with all that and it can spot fakes just by looking at the strokes used to compose a piece. In a new paper, researchers from Rutgers University and the Atelier for Restoration & Research of Paintings in the Netherlands document how their AI system broke down almost 300 line drawings by Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, and other famous artists into 80,000 individual strokes.
