Cybercriminals Impersonate Chief Exec's Voice with AI Software

Fraudsters are constantly looking for new ways to scam their victims. One unique case gives the security industry a glimpse of what they could do with artificial intelligence (AI) and voice recording. As part of an incident in March, an attacker called the CEO of a UK-based energy business pretending to be the head of its German parent company. Analysts believe AI-based software was used to impersonate the chief executive's voice, as it had the slight German accent and other qualities the UK CEO recognized in his boss's voice -- qualities that led him to believe the call was legitimate. The caller issued an "urgent" request to the CEO, demanding he transfer $243,000 to a Hungarian supplier within an hour's time.

In an article in War on the Rocks titled, ominously, "America Needs a'Dead Hand,'" US deterrence experts Adam Lowther and Curtis McGiffin propose a nuclear command, control, and communications setup with some eerie similarities to the Soviet system referenced in the title to their piece. The Dead Hand was a semiautomated system developed to launch the Soviet Union's nuclear arsenal under certain conditions, including, particularly, the loss of national leaders who could do so on their own. Given the increasing time pressure Lowther and McGiffin say US nuclear decision makers are under, "[I]t may be necessary to develop a system based on artificial intelligence, with predetermined response decisions, that detects, decides, and directs strategic forces with such speed that the attack-time compression challenge does not place the United States in an impossible position."

DOD Seeks Ethicist to Guide Deployment of Artificial Intelligence

The Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, stood up just last year, has plans to hire an ethicist to help guide the Defense Department's development and application of artificial intelligence technologies. "One of the positions we are going to fill will be somebody who is not just looking at technical standards, but who is an ethicist," said Air Force Lt. Gen. Jack Shanahan, the JAIC's director. "We are going to bring in someone who will have a deep background in ethics, and then the lawyers within the department will be looking at how we actually bake this into the Department of Defense." Speaking Aug. 30 at the Pentagon, Shanahan provided an update on the JAIC, where he's been since January. He'd previously led Project Maven, an artificial intelligence machine-learning pathfinder project under the undersecretary of defense for intelligence.


Citizen Data Science: Analyze Nature Without Programming

I recently gave an informal talk to a class of botany students at Gavilan College. The original topic was nature photography, but I also talked about the data science techniques that I used to create my recently completed photo book, Portraits of Birds: Shoreline Park. The concept for the book was to try to personally take photos of all of the bird species in a particular area, in this case Shoreline at Mountain View Park in Mountain View, California, which I later expanded to include the Palo Alto Baylands. To enumerate the species that have been seen in this area, I turned to two citizen science sites, iNaturalist and eBird, both of which have application programmatic interfaces (APIs). Note that while eBird is specific to birds, iNaturalist contains data on plants and other animals as well.

Facial recognition becomes opt-in feature at Facebook

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Facebook on Tuesday said facial recognition technology applied to photos at the social network will be an opt-in feature. The change that began rolling out to users around the world came as the leading social network remains under pressure to better protect privacy and user data, including biometric information. Nearly two years ago, Facebook introduced a face recognition feature that went beyond suggesting friends to tag in pictures or videos but could let user know when they were in images they had permission to see elsewhere on the service. Facebook is doing away with a "tag" suggestion setting in favor of an overall facial recognition setting that will be off by default, according to a post by artificial intelligence applied research lead Srinivas Narayanan. "Facebook's face recognition technology still does not recognize you to strangers," Narayanan said.

Facebook is "considering" hiding the numbers of likes to others in posts, similar to an experiment it's doing with company-owned Instagram in several countries. The idea is to take away the popularity contest of posting, which makes people feel bad when their post doesn't perform with big numbers. According to Psychology Today, rejection in digital form (not getting many likes) can sting just as much as in the analog world. Among younger users on Instagram, posting becomes a contest to see who can get the most likes. Facebook wouldn't add more than that it's considering the move, but social media lit up with the possibilities.
