Facebook Inc is opening up its face recognition technology to all users with an option to opt out, the social media company said, as it discontinued a related feature called "Tag Suggestions." The old feature enabled users to choose whether Facebook could suggest that their friends tag them in photos, without giving them control over other uses of the technology. The face recognition setting, available to some Facebook users since December 2017, has additional functions such as notifying account holders if their profile photo is used by someone else. People who opt in to the new setting will still have tag suggestions automatically generated about them. Facebook's face recognition technology has been at the center of a privacy related lawsuit since 2015.

An AI-powered program developed by Microsoft Corp. has surpassed the average level of the top players in a recent competition in Japan, Harry Shum, executive vice-president of the company's artificial intelligence and research group, said in Shanghai on Thursday. "To those friends who usually lose money in mahjong, this is good news to you," Shum said to laughter at the World AI Conference. "The bot player developed by Microsoft can deal with high uncertainty, presenting instincts akin to human, projection and deduction capabilities as well as a sense of overall consciousness."

Xero has bolstered its machine learning capabilities for document processing and extraction using technology from Hubdoc, a company that the cloud accounting firm acquired last year for $70 million. According to Xero, the new machine learning capabilities means advisors will have access to more accurate information, gain deeper understanding of financial health, and the flow of data will become more automated. Xero added it is working with advisors to pilot a short-term cash flow tool that uses data and advanced statistical methods to provide small businesses with a 30-day view of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cash flow predictions, including impact of existing bills and invoices. In addition, the company has introduced single sign-on, touting it as making it easier for developers to build on the Xero platform, onboard new users, and integrate Xero with certified third-party apps. Updates to the Xero Advisor Directory using geo-targeting have also been made, the company said during Xerocon Brisbane 2019, noting the technology will make it easier for small businesses to find a local accountant or bookkeeper and onboard new clients.

A scammer used deepfake technology to swindle a U.K. energy company out of $243,000. By mimicking the voice of the CEO of the energy firm's parent company, the person behind the deepfake swindling convinced the energy firm's CEO to transfer the money within the hour, according to The Wall Street Journal. It's a troubling vision of the future -- in which digital misinformation becomes so sophisticated that even a phone calls from your boss becomes suspicious. The crime was reported to investigators by the energy firm's insurance company, Euler Hermes Group SA, which declined to name either of the companies involved, the WSJ reports. So far, no one has identified a suspect, but the money that the energy CEO sent to a Hungarian account has since been traced to Mexico, and from there it was more widely distributed.
