Darktrace Cyber AI Analyst Investigates Threats at Machine Speed
Darktrace, the world's leading cyber AI company, has today announced the launch of the Cyber AI Analyst, a new technology that emulates human thought processes to continuously investigate cyber-threats at machine speed. Machine Learning and VR Are Driving Prosthetics Research
Fitting a patient for a prosthetic limb is normally a painstaking and time-consuming process. In some cases, trying to determine how capable a patient may be of operating a prosthetic limb even before fitting one has also been a problem. However, using virtual reality and reinforcement learning, researchers in North Carolina and Arizona are revealing new technologies and techniques to make prosthetic fitting more convenient for both patients and clinicians: In Charlotte, surgeons at OrthoCarolina used VR to demonstrate that patients born without hands had inborn abilities to control prosthetic hands without prerequisite targeted muscle re-innervation surgery (as often required by traumatic amputee patients). In Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Tempe,AZ., engineering professors demonstrated a tuning algorithm based on reinforcement learning could reduce the time needed to fit a robotic knee from hours to about 10 minutes. The researchers say the breakthroughs indicate a new era of convenience and optimism may be in the offing for amputees.

Looking at emerging technologies, Telang described the challenges Wells Fargo has faced in adopting machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI).
Artificial intelligence used to recognize primate faces in the wild
Scientists at the University of Oxford have developed new artificial intelligence software to recognise and track the faces of individual chimpanzees in the wild. The new software will allow researchers and wildlife conservationists to significantly cut back on time and resources spent analysing video footage, according to the new paper published today in Science Advances. "For species like chimpanzees, which have complex social lives and live for many years, getting snapshots of their behaviour from short-term field research can only tell us so much," says Dan Schofield, researcher and DPhil student at Oxford University's Primate Models Lab, School of Anthropology. "By harnessing the power of machine learning to unlock large video archives, it makes it feasible to measure behaviour over the long term, for example observing how the social interactions of a group change over several generations." The computer model was trained using over 10 million images from Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute (PRI) video archive of wild chimpanzees in Guinea, West Africa.

Amazon's latest payment method uses flesh and blood. The e-tailing giant's engineers are quietly testing scanners that can identify an individual human hand as a way to ring up a store purchase, with the goal of rolling them out at its Whole Foods supermarket chain in the coming months, The Post has learned. Employees at Amazon's New York offices are serving as guinea pigs for the biometric technology, using it at a handful of vending machines to buy such items as sodas, chips, granola bars and phone chargers, according to sources briefed on the plans. The high-tech sensors are different from fingerprint scanners found on devices like the iPhone and don't require users to physically touch their hands to the scanning surface. Instead, they use computer vision and depth geometry to process and identify the shape and size of each hand they scan before charging a credit card on file.

Zao, which has quickly become China's most downloaded free app, fuses the face in the original clip with your features. All that is required is a single selfie and the man or woman in the street is transformed into a star of the mobile screen, if not quite the silver one. In other words, anyone who yearns to be part of Titanic or Game of Thrones, The Big Bang Theory or the latest J-Pop sensation can now bypass the audition and go straight to the limelight without all that pesky hard work, talent and dedication. A whole new generation of synthetic movie idols could be unleashed upon the world: a Humphrey Bogus, a Phony Curtis, a Fake Dunaway. Zao already has its first star: the 30-year-old artist and games developer Allan Xia, who unwittingly became the face of the app last weekend after inserting himself into a Leonardo DiCaprio montage. Western media outlets hadn't paid much attention to Zao, which can only be accessed by users with a Chinese phone account, until Xia, who is based in Auckland but has a Chinese number, uploaded his experiments. After that, every media story covering the app came embedded with a clip of him strutting around in a Hawaiian shirt in Romeo Juliet, and basking in the golden sunset on deck in Titanic. How long did it take to claw himself to the top of the A-list? All I did was take a selfie, which was then ranked by the app to give me an idea of how well it would be able to generate videos based on my photo. It's looking to match your facial features to what is already there in its library of clips."

AI learns the language of chemistry to predict how to make medicines
University of Cambridge researchers have shown that an algorithm can predict the outcomes of complex chemical reactions with over 90% accuracy, outperforming trained chemists. The algorithm also shows chemists how to make target compounds, providing the chemical'map' to the desired destination. The results are reported in two studies in the journals ACS Central Science and Chemical Communications. A central challenge in drug discovery and materials science is finding ways to make complicated organic molecules by chemically joining together simpler building blocks. The problem is that those building blocks often react in unexpected ways.

The world's top research labs are rapidly improving a machine's ability to understand and respond to natural language. Machines are getting better at analyzing documents, finding information, answering questions and even generating language of their own. Aristo was built solely for multiple-choice tests. It took standard exams written for students in New York, though the Allen Institute removed all questions that included pictures and diagrams. Answering questions like that would have required additional skills that combine language understanding and logic with so-called computer vision.
