Facial recognition in China 'spot on', say Metropolitan Police Federation

Facial recognition in China is "absolutely correct" and "spot on", the head of the Metropolitan Police Federation has said, calling for it to be deployed in London "on a 24-hour basis". Ken Marsh, who is chairman of the Metropolitan Police staff association, said he believed the "fantastic" technology could be used to catch criminals and terrorists. Mr Marsh gave the example of the 2017 London Bridge attack, when police lost track of the terrorists in the run-up to the killings. He said: "Facial recognition, if it was pointed in certain areas in London on a 24-hour basis, could pick these individuals up… if we could have stopped that I'm all for this." The Chinese government has invested heavily in facial recognition, deploying it in the country's massive network of CCTV cameras.

Chinese university deploys facial recognition tech to monitor student behavior

The China Pharmaceutical University in Nanjing is testing an AI-based facial recognition system in its classrooms, in order to monitor student behavior and identify those that skip classes. According to local publication The Paper, the system, developed by Chinese startup Megvii, can automatically check attendance and report whether students are paying attention, reading, playing with their phone or napping. It also tracks how many times a student has raised their hand. The same facial recognition system is being used across the campus for access control, securing gates to facilities like libraries, laboratories and student dormitories. Xu Jianzhen, director of the Library and Information Center of China Pharmaceutical University, told The Paper that once student details are in the system, individual students can be recognized in just a second, making it faster and more convenient than alternative methods of access control.

UK court backs police use of face recognition, but fight isn't over

A man from Cardiff, UK, says the police breached his human rights when they used facial recognition technology, but today a court ruled that the police's actions were lawful. That is, however, hardly the end of the matter. South Wales Police has been trialling automated facial recognition (AFR) technology since April 2017. Other forces around the country are trialling similar systems, including London's Metropolitan Police. Bridges may have been snapped during a pilot called AFR Locate.


AI facial recognition software now works for wild chimpanzees too

An artificial intelligence that detects, tracks and recognises chimpanzees could make studying animals in the wild more efficient. Arsha Nagrani at the University of Oxford in the UK and her colleagues have developed a facial recognition AI that can detect and identify the individual chimpanzees captured in video footage recorded in the wild. Using the AI, they can cut down the time and resources needed to track animals in their natural habitat. The algorithm could help researchers and wildlife conservationists study the complex behaviours of chimpanzees and other primates more efficiently. The team trained the AI on 50 hours of archival footage – spanning 14 years – of chimpanzees in Bossou, Guinea in West Africa.


Amazon testing tech that uses the shape and size of customers' hands to check out at Whole Foods

By simply waving one's hand in front of a scanner, customers may soon be able to cash out at the health-centric grocery chain, Whole Foods, as soon as next year. Amazon, which purchased Whole Foods in 2017 for more than $13 billion, is reportedly developing computer vision technology that can judge the shape and size of customers' hands to create a unique handprint, according to sources cited by the New York Post. That data would then be linked to patrons' bank information, meaning customers would be able to waive their hands in front of scanner and complete the transaction in under a second. Whole Food will reportedly begin testing a technology that reads customers hand size and shape to make payments. Patrons will be able to wave their hands in front of a sensors and complete the transaction in under a second.
