A man in Jacksonville, Fla., looking to protect his Smart car from Hurricane Dorian had a crafty idea to move it out of harm's way: He pulled it into his kitchen. Jessica Eldridge said on Facebook on Tuesday that her husband, Patrick, was "afraid his car might blow away," so he parked it in their kitchen. Photos accompanying the post showed the car in the kitchen under ceiling lights, with a pair of dogs next to it. She wrote that their other car was in the garage.


Scape is 3D-mapping 100 cities to precisely anchor AR objects

Earlier this year, UK-based startup Scape Technologies previewed a potentially exciting new augmented reality technology for smartphones, promising to use a device's camera to automatically determine its location. Now the company's larger plan is coming into focus, and it's exciting -- using vast, accurate 3D maps to enable city-scale augmented reality applications. Scape's pitch is as simple as the enabling technology is complex. While some companies have mapped individual landmarks, buildings, or roads for narrow AR applications, Scape is now mapping entire cities. Already live in London and San Francisco, its 3D maps are underway for 100 cities, it told PCMag, thanks to data gathered by cameras with computer vision.


Elon Musk says his Neuralink startup already has a brain-machine interface working in monkeys

Neuralink plans to test its brain machine interface technology with four of its N1 chips installed under patients' skin. Neuralink, Elon Musk's startup that's trying to directly link brains and computers, has developed a system to feed thousands of electrical probes into a brain and hopes to start testing the technology on humans in in 2020, Chief Executive Elon Musk revealed Tuesday. "A monkey has been able to control a computer with his brain," Musk said at a San Francisco livestreaming the presentation on YouTube Tuesday, revealing even more research results than the company's scientists expected. Neuralink's initial goal is to help people deal with brain and spinal cord injuries or congenital defects, Musk said. The technology could help paraplegics who have lost the ability to move or sense because of spinal cord injury -- a medical treatment that's a lot less shocking than radical sci-fi ideas like "consensual telepathy."

IIT Guwahati develops 'AI tutor' for students

Bengaluru: A team of post-graduate students and teachers from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, said they are developing an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled chatbot to teach and support first year EEE students. Dubbed'ALBELA', the AI chatbot is capable of addressing the queries of the nearly 850 EEE students at the institute, the institution said in a statement on Tuesday. Professor Praveen Kumar of the EEE department said a dedicated team of seven research scholars has been developing the chatbot for the last seven months. "Earlier we did the trial runs of the chabot, and started using it from this academic session onwards," he said, adding that IBM has extended support to this project. The institute says the AI chatbot is trained to answer queries on topics relevant to the students.

PACAF's Integration Division Deputy Chief Ryan Raber revealed at the Genius Machines event on 3 September that the aim is to better and more rapidly predict a potential enemy's possible intentions. The planned mechanism will be used to improve PACAF's decision-making process and will focus on events taking place in the Pacific region, which means Russia and China could be the potential objects of study, the media outlet Defense One pointed out. PACAF itself didn't specify which countries' actions the planned system will try to predict. The system is expected to forecast a potential adversary's actions by detecting irregularities in its routines based on analysis of past and current actions. The process takes days when done by humans, but by computer with AI it can theoretically handle the result in "just minutes".


AI technology transforming recycling industry

In recent years, the recycling industry has taken a big hit. John Griffith with GFL Environmental in Denver, Colorado says the cost to recycle has gone up, and there's more pressure to make sure what's being recycled isn't contaminated with trash. "We process probably 30 tons an hour," Griffith said. Considering how much material the recycling facility takes in per day, low-cost efficiency is key, and technology has become its saving grace. "We're using robotics and artificial intelligence to help deal with some of the primary challenges within the recycling facility," AMP Robotics CEO Matanya Horowitz said.


Illinois Tech Becomes 1st University in Midwest to Offer Degree in Artificial Intelligence

This fall, students at the Illinois Institute of Technology will be among the first in the country to have the option of pursuing an undergraduate degree in AI. We want to train a workforce that can tackle the challenges and opportunities of the future, which includes AI and machine learning," said Aron Culotta, associate professor of computer science and director of Illinois Tech's Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence program. Historically, AI has been taught at the graduate level because it was more of a research area rather than a core component of computer science. But as the field has matured, Illinois Tech decided it was time to offer an undergraduate degree course. "We thought it was time to move some of these courses and concepts down to the undergraduate level so that when they graduate they will have both the traditional computational and design aspects as well as a good command of a number of these AI approaches," said Culotta.
