Activists demand facial recognition ban for law enforcement in major new push

The groups, which are planning to blanket lawmakers with emails and phone calls, are coming together under BanFacialRecognition, which was organized by the digital rights group Fight for the Future as a way to show the public exactly where and how the controversial surveillance technology is being used nationwide. "Facial recognition is one of the most authoritarian and invasive forms of surveillance ever created, and it's spreading like an epidemic. The technology has been banned by three cities -- Oakland and San Francisco in California, and Somerville, Mass. Fight for the Future, along with more than two dozen other organizations, is calling for a total ban on facial recognition technology at the federal level. Two tests of Amazon's facial recognition software, which the tech giant claims can now detect "fear," falsely labeled California state lawmakers and members of Congress as criminal suspects. Most of the false positives were people of color in both tests. The Jeff Bezos-led company has said that it encourages law enforcement agencies to use 99 percent confidence ratings for public safety applications of the technology. Amazon's Ring security service, which deploys facial recognition technology, is reportedly working with more than 200 police departments. "When using facial recognition to identify persons of interest in an investigation, law enforcement should use the recommended 99 percent confidence threshold, and only use those predictions as one element of the investigation" and not the sole determinant, the company said in a blog post earlier this year. The grassroots coalition, which includes Consumer Action, Restore the Fourth, Electronic Privacy Information Center, Color of Change, United We Dream and Media Justice, is united in the belief that regulating the technology isn't enough. As a recent example, researchers have shown that popular word embedding algorithms exhibit stereotypical biases, such as gender bias. The widespread use of these algorithms in machine learning systems, from automated translation services to curriculum vitae scanners, can amplify stereotypes in important contexts. Although methods have been developed to measure these biases and alter word embeddings to mitigate their biased representations, there is a lack of understanding in how word embedding bias depends on the training data. In this work, we develop a technique for understanding the origins of bias in word embeddings.

Just a year ago, this natural peninsula located at the heart of the Zhangjiang Science City, a high-end zone located in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, was just a humble place of swaying reeds and wild flowers. Now, it has emerged as a burgeoning test bed for China's artificial intelligence (AI) industry: an area with 20 office buildings, equipped with Alpheus smart recycling bins, Infineon smart road lamps and Slamtec security robots, all busy doing their jobs autonomously. But for its planners, this is only the beginning. In April 2018, Zhangjiang Science City released its blueprint to build an AI island that concentrates digital projects in an array of fields, including AI, big data, cloud computing, blockchain, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), and then apply these technologies across the region. The move comes as part of Zhangjiang's efforts to become an "Intelligence Valley" for the high-tech zone which has already earned its reputations as China's "Medicine Valley" and Shanghai's "Silicon Valley." With AI companies pouring in over the past year, a multi-layered AI ecosystem is taking shape, becoming a new driver for the industrial upgrade of Zhangjiang Science City, as well as that of the wider Pudong New Area.
Fake AI-generated voice of CEO used to defraud energy company - SiliconANGLE
An unnamed energy company has been defrauded of $243,000 by scammers who used artificial intelligence to mimic the voice of its chief executive officer. In an incident detailed by The Wall Street Journal, the scammers used the technology in a phone call with the CEO of a U.K. subsidiary of the unnamed German company to order a transfer of funds to a Hungarian supplier. The U.K. CEO believed that he was talking to his German chief and transferred the funds. Those behind the fraud attempted the trick again, but the U.K. subsidiary became suspicious as staff noticed that the calls were originating from Austria, not Germany. The funds were transferred from a Hungarian bank to an account in Mexico before being transferred elsewhere.

Fedor the six foot-tall robo-naut lends astronauts a helping hand on board the ISS
Russia's pioneering humanoid robot Fedor has started assisting astronauts on board the International Space Station. Video footage reveals the six-foot tall robot holding a towel and a drill before handing the power tool to an astronaut. The robot was sent into space to learn new skills so that it and others like it can carry out dangerous operations instead of astronauts, such as space walks. Fedor, the nickname of the pioneering robot, stands at six foot tall, weighs 353 pounds and can perform complex movements by mimicking a human on Earth. Roscosmos hopes it will help astronauts carry out tasks remotely.
Facial recognition sucessfully identifies individual chimpanzees in the wild
Researchers at the University of Oxford have developed artificial intelligence software able to tell the difference between individual chimpanzees in the wild. As an endangered species, keeping track of the movement, social lives and behaviour of chimpanzees is important for researchers and conservationists. Dan Schofield, researcher and DPhil student at Oxford University's Primate Models Lab, School of Anthropology explains why this is key for research: "For species like chimpanzees, which have complex social lives and live for many years, getting snapshots of their behaviour from short-term field research can only tell us so much. By harnessing the power of machine learning to unlock large video archives, it makes it feasible to measure behaviour over the long term, for example observing how the social interactions of a group change over several generations." This novel use of facial recognition saw the software trained using more than 10 million images from Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute.
