THE CONTEST between China and America, the world's two superpowers, has many dimensions, from skirmishes over steel quotas to squabbles over student visas. Both countries are investing large sums in militarised artificial intelligence (AI), from autonomous robots to software that gives generals rapid tactical advice in the heat of battle. China frets that America has an edge thanks to the breakthroughs of Western companies, such as their successes in sophisticated strategy games. America fears that China's autocrats have free access to copious data and can enlist local tech firms on national service. Neither side wants to fall behind.
DoD AI chief cites progress on agency’s artificial-intelligence capabilities
Ongoing projects for the artificial intelligence (AI) push, Shanahan told attendees, include predictive maintenance for the H-60 helicopter; humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, with an initial emphasis on wildfires and flooding; cyber sense-making, focusing on event detection, user activity monitoring, and network mapping; information operations; and intelligent business automation. The biggest project for fiscal year 2020, he said, is what the Pentagon is calling AI for maneuver and fires: "With individual lines of effort or product lines oriented on warfighting operations; for example, operations intelligence fusion, joint all-domain command and control, accelerated sensor-to-shooter timelines, autonomous and swarming systems, target development, and operations center workflows. "We are also embarking with DIU [Defense Innovation Unit] and the services' Surgeons General, as well as many others, on a predictive health project," Shanahan stated, "with several proposed lines of effort, to include health records analysis, medical imagery classification and PTSD [Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder] mitigation/suicide prevention. Our other major effort, one that is instrumental to our AI center of excellence concept, is what we are calling the Joint Common Foundation, or JCF. The JCF will be a platform that will provide access to data, tools, environments, libraries and to other certified platforms to enable software and AI engineers to rapidly develop, evaluate, test and deploy AI-enabled solutions to warfighters.

Now, Sonos is taking on all those portable Bluetooth speaker competitors with its Move speaker ($399, out Sept. 24), which connects like its standard home speakers over Wi-Fi and also uses Bluetooth when you need music to go. At about 9 ½ inches tall, the Move speaker is dust- and water-resistant and, when fully charged, provides ten hours of battery life.

It was only a matter of time until somebody created an artificial intelligence designed to transmute you into an anime character. And now a team of South Korean researchers from video game company NCSoft has done just that. By carrying out advanced experiments on neuronal cultures and large scale simulations, a group of scientists from Bar-Ilan University in Israel claims to have created a new type of ultra-fast artificial intelligence algorithm. Bill Stasior, the former head of Apple's Siri division, is leaving the company after nearly a decade to join Microsoft's artificial intelligence division, reports The Information. Although Stasior left Apple in May, he's only joining Microsoft later this month as a corporate vice president, reporting to Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott.
How AI Is Protecting Against Payments Fraud
AI is proving to be very effective in battling fraud based on results achieved by financial institutions as reported by senior executives in a recent survey, AI Innovation Playbook published by PYMNTS in collaboration with Brighterion. The study is based on interviews with 200 financial executives from commercial banks, community banks, and credit unions across the United States. One of the more noteworthy findings is that financial institutions with over $100B in assets are the most likely to have adopted AI, as the study has found 72.7% of firms in this asset category are currently using AI for payment fraud detection. Taken together, the findings from the survey reflect how AI thwarts payments fraud and deserves to be a high priority in any digital business today.

Team including Kyoto University researchers succeeds in recognizing chimpanzee faces using AI
KYOTO – A team including Kyoto University researchers has said it succeeded in automatically recognizing the faces of wild chimpanzees with an accuracy of over 90 percent using an artificial intelligence system. Kyoto University conducts research on wild chimpanzees in a field site in Guinea in West Africa set up in 1976. Using the AI system's deep-learning methods, the University of Oxford analyzed a total of 50 hours of footage recorded between 2000 and 2013 by three cameras at the field site on the top of a small mountain. The system detected some 10 million images of chimpanzee faces from the footage, according to the team, whose study is to be published Thursday on an electronic edition of the U.S. journal Science Advances. The system improved its face-recognition ability as time advanced, recognizing the identities of 23 individuals with an accuracy of 92.5 percent.
