Recent MEMS and sensor leaps support more personalized user experiences in biomedical/healthcare, the food supply chain, and Internet of Things (IoT). LG unveils G8X and revamped Dual Screen accessory
It's IFA 2019, and that can only mean one thing: Gadgets abound for an entire week straight. LG, as it's apt to do, introduced an incrementally refined phone in the LG G8X (the successor to the LG G8). But the accessory the Seoul company unveiled alongside it is arguably more interesting: an updated version of its snap-on Dual Screen product that improves upon the original in several respects. Pricing has yet to be announced for the G8X and revamped Dual Screen, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for more details. LG anticipates both will ship in Q4.

Six of Germany's Helmholtz centers are cooperating to ensure patient privacy is protected while allowing science to use patient data to advance innovative medicine. They have set up the Helmholtz Medical Security, Privacy, and AI Research Center (HMSP) to pursue this aim. The Helmholtz Center for Information Security (CISPA), the German Center for Neurodegenerative Disease (DZNE), the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the German Research Center for Environmental Health (HMGU), the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI), and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) are implementing the interdisciplinary work of the HMSP. The new center brings together leading experts from IT-security, privacy, artificial intelligence (AI)-machine learning, and medical professionals to allow for secure and privacy-preserving processing of medical data using technologies of the future. HMSP spokesman Michael Backes, founding director of CISPA, explained, "The gathering, analysis, and further development of enormous banks of medical data enable researchers to gain unparalleled insights and develop new approaches. Doing this in a trustworthy, secure, and efficient manner demands interdisciplinary, top-level research."

I was 13 years old when the movie Alien was released. It scared me into a month-long spell of anxiety. The hair on the back of my neck was perpetually up and I had the jittery demeanor of a combat veteran. While the full-grown xenomorph alien was chilling, the larval stage face-hugger was terrifying. Not only did it penetrate the human host's throat, planting the chest-burster in the gut, but it was intrinsically grotesque, an odious, zoological mash-up of scurrying spider and slithering snake. It's easy to interpret our fears of alien predators as nothing more than superficial horror ginned up by the Hollywood fright machine.

AI Will Change War, But Not in the Way You Think - War on the Rocks
This article was submitted in response to the call for ideas issued by the co-chairs of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, Eric Schmidt and Robert Work. It addresses the first question (part a.) which asks how artificial intelligence will change the nature of war. However much the military might wish to take these technologies from the screen to the battlefield, the reality of artificial intelligence (AI) is far less sexy than Hollywood would have you believe. Unlike science fiction movies, which depict the technology itself as an instrument of war, AI will function primarily as an enabler. AI will change how wars are fought, but not the nature of war.
What Business Leaders Should Know About Democratized Data
Throughout the history of digital technology, data was largely the language of vigorously trained computer scientists and engineers. Only in the past decade, with the influx of highly-targeted social advertising, has data really entered the public consciousness. Privacy legislation like the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), enacted in 2018, and next year's California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), have helped data become part of the common tongue. This legislation means more control for consumers and accountability for enterprises, ultimately laying the groundwork for data's next phase: democratization. When I first heard this idea of data democratization a few years ago, it was said that the democratization of data would create a technological utopia. Of course, utopia is elusive, and societal applications of technologies -- however well-intentioned -- do not always pan out as planned.
