Though billed as an artificial intelligence (AI) gathering, the dominant theme of the AI Summit appeared to be tech start-up funding. I started the day attending a presentation by former FNB CEO turned venture capitalist Michael Jordaan in the JSE-sponsored'scale-ups' room. Jordaan ended his talk by begging the young, educated members of the audience not to emigrate, but to remain in South Africa and start businesses offering solutions to the country's many serious problems. "Entrepreneurs can do more for this country than politicians or anyone else," he says.

Indian doctor performs robot-controlled heart surgery from a remote location
An Indian surgeon has become the first the world to perform heart surgery through a robot he controlled from a remote location. Dr Tejas Patel, a cardiologist in Ahmedabad, carried out the same delicate procedure on five different patients over the course of several days. It is believed he performed the operations while he was at a temple, controlling the robot at his hospital from 20 miles (32km) away. The results of his operations, all of which were successful, have been published in a spin-off of the prestigious medical journal The Lancet. It is not, however, the first long-distance robot-controlled surgery.
World War II bomber the De Havilland Mosquito could be back in British skies 'by 2023'
An iconic wooden plane used in the Second World War could be back in the skies by 2023 thanks to an £8million restoration project based on thousands of original drawings. The De Havilland Mosquito bomber hasn't been seen in British airspace since the last one crashed in 1996. But a private project is investing huge amounts of money and years of man-hours to bring'The Wooden Wonder' back to life using more than 22,500 original blueprints from Airbus. The People's Mosquito, working with aircraft reconstruction specialists Retrotec, hope the Rolls-Royce powered machine will be completed in the next four years. Machine learning may augment diagnostics of kidney disease
Two new studies reveal that modern machine learning--a branch of artificial intelligence in which systems learn from data, identify patterns, and make decisions--may augment traditional diagnostics of kidney disease. The findings appear in an upcoming issue of JASN. Pathologists often classify various kidney diseases on the basis of visual assessments of biopsies from patients' kidneys; however, machine learning has the potential to automate and augment the accuracy of classifications. In one study, a team led by Pinaki Sarder, PhD and Brandon Ginley, BS (Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo) developed a computational algorithm to detect the severity of diabetic kidney disease without human intervention. The algorithm examines a digital image of a patient's kidney biopsy at the microscopic level and extracts information on glomeruli, the small blood vessels of the kidney that filter waste from the blood for excretion.
