6G, quantum computing among conference highlights

"The advancement of science and technologies will improve people's lives and reduce social inequality, while making an economic impact," Narong Sirilertworakul, president of the NSTDA, said at the agency's annual technology conference yesterday. The 5G mobile network is not only 20 times faster than 4G, but also helps connect other technologies, namely AI, big data, cloud and the Internet of Things (IoT). Although 6G technology is still in the early stages, it's expected to be more than 1,000 times faster than 5G, Mr Narong said. He has seen the rise of quantum computing and engineering, while higher internet speeds for the IoT and sensor technology are key to driving data usage. Powerful computing is needed to help solve complex tasks, such as decoding DNA.

Artificial Intelligence Can Spot Plankton from Space - Eos

Scientists mimicked the neural networks of the brain to map phytoplankton types in the Mediterranean Sea. A new study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans presented a new method of classifying phytoplankton that relies on artificial intelligence clustering. Phytoplankton blanket surface waters of the world's oceans, and pigments in their cells absorb certain wavelengths of light, like the chlorophyll that gives plants their green color. In the Mediterranean Sea, where the latest study focused its efforts, an array of phytoplankton species bloom throughout the year. Past research has mined satellite images of ocean color in the Mediterranean for common pigments found in phytoplankton.


Unbabel opens New AI Office in Pittsburgh

Unbabel announces the opening of a new office in Pittsburgh, PA, USA, one of the world's most active hubs of Machine Translation and Natural Language Processing research and applied technology Led by Alon Lavie, VP of Language Technologies and an adjunct professor at the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), the new office location aims to leverage the long-term ties and strong relationship between Unbabel and the university. Lavie believes that core Machine Translation technology has improved significantly in the past several years and that Unbabel's Customer Service Solution is a fantastic use case for it. "With multinational companies boasting customer bases throughout the world, the opportunity to use Machine Translation coupled with human feedback to provide a better level of customer support is exactly what we should be doing with the latest core technology," he added. Unbabel has already hired two Research Scientists and a Research Engineer to join the new team. Unbabel is recruiting for the office and has two full-time vacancies in Pittsburgh, one for Senior Research Engineer and another for a Senior Research Scientist.


Shanghai: new artificial intelligence hub

Shanghai is striving to build itself into an artificial intelligence hub as the city explores further applications of the technology. Last December, the city issued an implementation plan on AI developments in key areas such as education, healthcare, manufacturing and urban management. For an initial batch of scenarios launched in the plan, Shanghai received more than 170 solutions from around the world. The city introduced its second batch in July, with 28 solutions from international enterprises. According to statistics, Shanghai has attracted more than 1,000 core AI enterprises and more than 3,000 AI-related companies, with about 100,000 employees in the sector.

International success for U of M Robot Team at FIRA HuroCup

The U of M Autonomous Agents Lab robot team did very well at the FIRA HuroCup, held August 11 – 16, 2019 in Changwon, Korea, placing third and fourth overall. More than 50 teams from 10 countries competed including: South Korea, Taiwan, Canada, China, India, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, and Malaysia. FIRA is a multi-sport robotic event modelled after a human decathlon. Overall placing is determined by earning as many points as possible over all the events, and the same robot must be used for all events. This year's events consisted of: archery (moving targets), a marathon, a sprint, basketball free throws, weightlifting, united soccer (forming soccer teams with randomly selected robots from different entrants), a triple jump (requiring multiple jumps and the ability to land without damage), an obstacle run, soccer penalty kicks, and a Spartan race (moving over uneven terrain and getting over a wall by climbing a ladder and a rope).
