AI robot CIMON makes its International Space Station debut

Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) have been joined by an AI robot called CIMON. The current ISS commander, German astronaut Alexander Gerst, was first to speak with CIMON. Gerst said "Wake up, CIMON" which prompted the robot to respond "What can I do for you?" CIMON and Gerst's first assignment was to perform a student-designed experiment with crystals. The robot, after recognising Gerst's face and positioning itself autonomously, provided instructions on how to conduct the experiment. On Earth, CIMON weight just five kilograms and was designed by Airbus.

Both Sides Now: Looking At Two-Sided Paintings With X-Rays And AI

Art and conservation experts regularly rely on X-ray imaging to find out what's going on underneath the surface of a painting. It allows them to learn more about the paint used, the technique, or the painted surface. Now, researchers have found a way to improve this technology with artificial intelligence. Some of the X-ray images of this work have now been further analysed using artificial intelligence. Even though X-ray imaging is an effective way to study the hidden layers of a painting, it doesn't discriminate between the actual layer of interest and everything else.


Artificial intelligence approaches may improve diagnostics of kidney disease

Pathologists often classify various kidney diseases on the basis of visual assessments of biopsies from patients' kidneys; however, machine learning has the potential to automate and augment the accuracy of classifications. In one study, a team led by Pinaki Sarder, PhD and Brandon Ginley, BS (Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo) developed a computational algorithm to detect the severity of diabetic kidney disease without human intervention. The algorithm examines a digital image of a patient's kidney biopsy at the microscopic level and extracts information on glomeruli, the small blood vessels of the kidney that filter waste from the blood for excretion. These structures are known to become progressively damaged and scarred over the course of diabetes. There are typically 10 to 20 individual glomeruli per biopsy, and the algorithm detects the location of each glomerular sub-component in the digital images, and then makes many measurements on each sub-component.

It's not often you can put nuclear weapons, terrorism and climate change on the same list as quantum computing, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, but the U.S. government believes all pose an "emerging threat" to its national security. Several key agencies in the U.S. intelligence community were asked what they saw as long-term threats faced by the country in the next decade and beyond, and the future of "dual-use technologies" took center stage. Agnostic technologies like encryption, autonomous and unmanned systems, AI and quantum computing rank at the top of the agencies' "worry list" for fears that they could be used to cause harm, rather than advance society. While all can be used for good -- to secure data, to survey a dangerous area or simply to save time and effort -- the government says that all can have disastrous effects if used by an adversary. For example, the government says that, "adversaries could gain increased access to AI through affordable designs used in the commercial industry, and could apply AI to areas such as weapons and technology," and that "quantum communications could enable adversaries to develop secure communications that U.S. personnel would not be able to intercept or decrypt."


The Future of AI Part 3

This article will focus on the impact of AI, 5G, Edge Computing on the healthcare sector in the 2020s as well as a section on Quantum Computing's potential impact on AI, healthcare and financial services. The next in the series will deal with how we can use AI in the fight against climate change including the protection of the Amazon, smart cities and AGI. For those who are new to AI, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, I recommend taking a look at the following article entitled "An Introduction to AI." I will refer to Machine Learning and Deep Learning as being subsets of AI. Furthermore, this article is non-exhaustive in relation to potential applications of AI to healthcare and Quantum Computing to various sectors of the economy. The reason for the focus on AI in healthcare is in light of recent articles by a few senior medical practitioners in the US expressing concern about the role of AI in healthcare.
