A recent report by the OECD showed that Europe is only capitalising on a fraction (12%) of its digital potential. Most companies limit their digital use to email and internet. Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) are particularly slow to integrate digital technologies. The recent Digital Economy and Society Index Report found that "Less than a fifth of companies in the EU-28 are highly digitised" and that "Use of robots is low on an EU level, with 6.7% of all enterprises using industrial or service robots. The share of large enterprises that use robots is four times higher than the share of SMEs."

Expense reporting is a time-consuming chore. Just ask the folks at Concur, who estimate that it takes 20 minutes on average to complete a single report and 18 minutes to correct an erroneous one. That's why Anant Kale and Kunal Verma set out to find a better way with AI, which seven years ago evolved into automated expensing startup AppZen. A little less than a year after raising $35 million in venture capital, San Jose, California-based AppZen today revealed that it recently closed a $50 million series C round led by Coatue Management, with participation from investors Redpoint Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The fresh funds bring the startup's total raised to over $100 million, which CEO Kale says will accelerate its mission to become the top AI platform to reduce spend, comply with policies, and streamline processes. AppZen recently surpassed the 1,500 customer mark, attracting nearly a third of Fortune 500 companies and quintupling revenue in the process.

Uizard, the Copenhagen-based startup that is using "machine intelligence" to quickly turn app sketches into prototypes, has raised $2.8 million in seed funding. The round is led by Nordic VC firm byFounders, with participation from LDV Capital, av8 Ventures, and New York Venture Partners. A number of individuals are also investing, including Scott Kurnit, Julia Qiu, Lars Houbak, and Alex Spiro. Aiming to accelerate the ideation phase of website and app design, Uizard says it legerages "advanced" machine learning and computer vision to turn a simple sketch into a basic prototype for almost immediate testing. Sketched can be drawn with pen and paper, photographed, and then uploaded to Uizard for the AI to do its work.

However, with increasingly expanding weather data sets and looming deadlines, it is nearly impossible for them to monitor all storm formations -- especially smaller-scale ones -- in real time. Now, there is a computer model that can help forecasters recognize potential severe storms more quickly and accurately, thanks to a team of researchers at Penn State, AccuWeather, Inc., and the University of Almería in Spain. They have developed a framework based on machine learning linear classifiers -- a kind of artificial intelligence -- that detects rotational movements in clouds from satellite images that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. This AI solution ran on the Bridges supercomputer at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. In their study, the researchers analyzed more than 50,000 historical U.S. weather satellite images.

The government has today (9 September) unveiled details of how it will help thousands of people across the country living with debilitating, painful and/or sometimes life-threatening diseases by investing £133 million in life-changing treatments for arthritis and cancer and for pioneering gene-based therapies for diseases including dementia and Parkinson's. Faster, more accurate diagnosis, and earlier interventions will be boosted by £50 million to be pumped into NHS diagnostic services and support the work of existing Centres of Excellence in digital pathology and imaging with artificial intelligence. The centres – based in Leeds, Oxford, Coventry and London – will be able to partner with more NHS Trusts and further develop cutting edge products using digital systems and artificial intelligence that could ultimately save lives. Adult social care will also receive a new cash injection of £7.5 million to use research to improve care delivery for some of the most vulnerable people in our society and £14 million for bioscience projects and technologies across the UK that could, for example, treat osteoarthritis and develop new vaccines.
