What China AI-based education tells us about work

#artificialintelligence

China has "started a grand experiment in AI education", with tens of millions of students, that "could reshape how the world learns". Or tell us something else. Like reminding us what must be the main purpose of learning. There are two broad issues combined in that article. The most evident is the intrinsical limits of "artificial intelligence (AI)-based education".

How AI can help Students in Online Education - Online Education Blog of Touro College

#artificialintelligence

The following is a guest post by Pete McCain, a technology startup enthusiast associated with App Velocity. If you would like to submit a guest post, please contact us. There was a time when we all were highly skeptical about online education because we couldn't fathom a computer screen replacing our classrooms and the education ideals that come with them. But now examining the impact of online education, we can clearly see how eagerly we've embraced the idea of e-learning. It has levelled up education in the developed parts of the world and democratized education where schools and teachers couldn't reach.

NHS places ยฃ130m bet on AI to treat debilitating conditions

#artificialintelligence

The government will look to artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnose and treat long-term life-threatening conditions like cancer and Parkinson's with a financial package worth ยฃ133 million. Five Centres of Excellence, located in major cities across the UK, will use a ยฃ50 million fund to support existing work in digital pathology and imaging powered by AI. These facilities, which were established in November last year, can also partner with more NHS Trusts to design products based on the digital systems the centres are currently developing. The work predominantly involves improving the speed and accuracy of diagnostics as well as early intervention treatment. The centres themselves are based in Leeds, Oxford, Coventry, Glasgow and London.

That eerily meticulous, methodical, and measured voice. For decades, HAL 9000, the sentient computer and antagonist extraordinaire in Stanley Kubrik's 2001: A Space Odyssey, or the gun-wielding, cyborg assassin the Terminator, have become pop culture's shorthand for Artificial Intelligence (AI), in all its potential and potential malfeasance. Perhaps because these kinds of depictions of AI are so dominant, this technology maintains an aura of intrigue.

The Rise of T-1000: Artificial Intelligence on the Battlefield - ClearanceJobs

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) or machine learning is being used by military intelligence and at the high strategic level. The question is whether this technology will ever filter down to the soldier actually doing the fighting on the ground? Science fiction novels and movies suggest a system that can communicate with a warfighter in real time and provide situational awareness, but how far is the fiction from reality? "The most important weapon is situation awareness, and there are AI-based tools to help a lot with this," explained Jim Purtilo, associate professor of computer science at the University of Maryland. "Visualization, communication, simple planning, these all go together at squad level," Purtilo told ClearanceJobs. "Being able to leverage augmented reality to'see' where the bad guys are, this is very cool. Being able to aim your squad weapon at a target and in effect use it as a pointer to call in indirect fire, even cooler."

AI news: UK has the second-highest number of AI companies in the world

#artificialintelligence

You'd be hard pushed to have a conversation about technology today that doesn't mention artificial intelligence (AI) at some point. The technology has massive potential to shape and enhance our working and personal lives, but for all the pros, some remained worried about the downsides. With talk of job loss a result of increased use of AI, should we be that concerned? Perhaps not if analyst firm Gartner's predictions are to be believed. It reckons that AI will eliminate 1.8 million jobs. The good news is that AI will also be responsible for creating 2.3 million jobs by 2020.
