IBM Study: The Skills Gap is Not a Myth, Be Addressed with Real Solutions

In the next three years, as many as 120 million workers in the world's 12 largest economies may need to be retrained or reskilled as a result of AI and intelligent automation, according to a new IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) study. In addition, only 41 percent of CEOs surveyed say that they have the people, skills and resources required to execute their business strategies. The study, which includes input from more than 5,670 global executives in 48 countries, points to compounding challenges that require a fundamental shift in how companies meet and manage changing workforce needs throughout all levels of the enterprise. According to the global research, the time it takes to close a skills gap through training has increased by more than 10 times in just four years. In 2014, it took three days on average to close a capability gap through training in the enterprise; in 2018, it took 36 days.


UK artificial intelligence investment reaches record levels

The UK is now third in the world for artificial intelligence (AI) investment, behind the US and China, after attracting more capital in six months than in all of 2018. AI investment in the UK reached ยฃ859.29m in that time, compared with ยฃ825.85m in the preceding 12 months, according to figures collected by business information resource Crunchbase. The figures show that the UK's AI sector is now in its fifth year of consecutive growth, with investment increasing almost six-fold between 2014 and 2018. The growth has predominately been fuelled by startups with 50 or fewer employees, which account for 89% of the UK's AI ecosystem. According to representatives from entrepreneurs network Tech Nation, the focus now needs to be on scaling the UK's existing AI business to capitalise on these investment trends.

Investment into UK artificial intelligence companies reached record levels in the first six months of this year, sealing a record year for funding and the UK's position as a top three country for AI investment, according to new figures. Tech Nation, a network for UK tech entrepreneurs, compiled the statistics to coincide with the launch of its new Applied AI growth programme. The statistics, which Tech Nation sourced from Crunchbase, reveal that AI investment grew six-fold between 2014 and 2018, with UK AI "scaleups" (companies with an average annualised return of at least 20 percent in the past 3 years with at least 10 employees) raising almost double that of France, Germany and the rest of Europe combined last year. Based on statistics from the first half of 2019, the sector's surge is showing no signs of slowing down. Crunchbase figures show AI funding in 2019 has already surpassed that achieved in the entire of 2018 ($1,021,642,595), reaching $1,063,012,777 and pushing the UK to third in the world for raising AI investment, behind China and the US, respectively.


Artificial intelligence may improve kidney disease diagnosis - ET CIO

Washington D.C: Researchers discovered that modern machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence may augment the traditional way of diagnosing kidney disease. Pathologists often classify various kidney diseases on the basis of visual assessments of biopsies from patients' kidneys; however, machine learning has the potential to automate and augment the accuracy of classifications. In one study, a team led by Pinaki Sarder, PhD and Brandon Ginley, BS (Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo) developed a computational algorithm to detect the severity of diabetic kidney disease without human intervention. The algorithm examined a digital image of a patient's kidney biopsy at the microscopic level and extracted information on glomeruli, the small blood vessels of the kidney that filter waste from the blood for excretion. These structures are known to become progressively damaged and scarred over the course of diabetes, reported the study published in the journal -- journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

In a blog post, NASA reported that the uncrewed Soyuz MS-14 spacecraft carrying the life-sized robot "is safely back on Earth," after parachuting to a landing in Kazakhstan at 5:32 p.m. EDT Friday. Russia's Roscosmos space agency sent the robot on a mission to the International Space Station on Aug. 22.

Thieves Reportedly Used Voice Deepfake of a CEO to Steal $240,000

Thieves used voice-mimicking software to imitate a company executive's speech and dupe his subordinate into sending hundreds of thousands of dollars to a secret account, the company's insurer said, in a remarkable case that some researchers are calling one of the world's first publicly reported artificial-intelligence heists. The managing director of a British energy company, believing his boss was on the phone, followed orders one Friday afternoon in March to wire more than $240,000 (roughly Rs. 1.7 crores) to an account in Hungary, said representatives from the French insurance giant Euler Hermes, which declined to name the company. The request was "rather strange," the director noted later in an email, but the voice was so lifelike that he felt he had no choice but to comply. The insurer, whose case was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, provided new details on the theft to The Washington Post on Wednesday, including an email from the employee tricked by what the insurer is referring to internally as "the false Johannes." Now being developed by a wide range of Silicon Valley titans and AI startups, such voice-synthesis software can copy the rhythms and intonations of a person's voice and be used to produce convincing speech.
