Emerging Memories And Artificial Intelligence
On August 29, 2019 I put on a workshop on Emerging Memories and Artificial Intelligence at Stanford University put on by the Stanford Center for Magnetic Nanotechnology and Coughlin Associates. We had several interesting speakers talking about various types of artificial intelligence and the role that new non-volatile memories will play in both training AI models and implementing them in the field using inference engines. This piece will talk about some of the material presented at this workshop. Dr. Shan Wang, co-organizer of the event gave a introduction, talking about emerging non-volatile memories and in particular on Magnetic Random Access Memory (MRAM). He spoke about how various new memories work--in particular Resistive RAM (RRAM), Phase Change Memory (PCM), MRAM and Ferrroelectic RAM (FRAM).
SynVAE AI translates visual artwork into melodies
Synesthesia, which an estimated 1% to 25% of the world's population experience, is a phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory pathway (such as hearing) leads to involuntary experiences in a second sensory pathway (such as sight). Those with chromesthesia "hear" sounds as color, for instance, while those with lexical-gustatory synesthesia have associations between words and tastes. In a recent study that appears to be at least partly inspired by this area, researchers at the University of Amsterdam investigated an AI system -- Synesthetic Variational Autoencoder, or SynVAE -- capable of mapping characteristics of paintings and other visual art to musical phrases (in the form of MIDI files). They say in a qualitative trial, human evaluators were able to match MIDI files to their muse with accuracies of up to 73%. "Art is experienced as a flow of information between an artist and an observer. Should the latter be visually impaired, however, a barrier appears," wrote the researchers.

Two startups to create 1 lakh AI, deep-learning experts by 2020
New Delhi: Two startups incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, have joined hands with a mission to create 1,00,000 experts in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning by 2020. GUVI, which offers a platform for students in Tier 2,3 cities, to learn in vernacular languages, is now collaborating with One Fourth Labs, a startup founded by a IIT Madras faculty, which offers advanced AI courses at nominal fees, starting at ₹1,000. AI is one of the dominant technologies of this generation, which has helped machines reach human-level performance on specific tasks such as identifying faces, classifying images, playing complex strategy games, detecting anomalies in medical images and so on. There is a huge demand for AI talent in India, but the supply is limited due to a shortage of affordable courses, which take students from basics to advanced topics. GUVI will be the platform partner and One Fourth Labs will be the content partner for the joint initiative.

The 33rd annual conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) is going to be held at Vancouver Convention Center, Vancouver, Canada from December 8th to 14th, 2019. How IBM is delivering AI-generated highlights at the US Open
IBM has once again partnered with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and they're using new AI-powered tools during the US Open to deliver AI-generated highlights, real-time stats and match analysis, as well as an onsite experience center where attendees can experience AI in action. There's a new technology solution, IBM Coach Advisor, that uses AI and analytics to quantify a player's physical exertion and endurance and make correlations to match performance, both during regular games and at the US Open. There's also IBM Watson OpenScale, which figures out the most emotion-packed moments on court for highlight reels. This means that fans watching the men's finals with Danlil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal, or watching highlights from the women's finals with Serena Williams and Bianca Andreescu will be able to view the most breath-taking moments thanks to AI. This is different from the traditional way that coaches assess an athlete's mechanics and endurance.
