Since late last year, a group of workers within Amazon have been organizing to push the company to radically reduce its carbon emissions. Yesterday, they announced a major new action: on 20 September, Amazon workers around the world will walk out of their offices to join the Global Climate Strike. So far, over 1,000 workers have pledged to participate. The organizers have three demands. They want the company to commit to zero emissions by 2030, to have zero custom cloud computing contracts with fossil fuel companies, and to spend zero dollars on funding climate-denying lobbyists and politicians. I spoke to one of the walkout's organizers, a 28-year-old Amazon employee in Seattle named Rebecca Sheppard.

Huge social questions like "how are men and women perceived differently" cannot be easily answered without analyzing rhetoric on a massive scale. But what if we could analyze millions of words, all at once, to get a sense of what patterns emerge in how men and women were described? It wasn't until recently that machine learning algorithms could help researchers do just that. In a recent study, Dr. Isabelle Augenstein, a computer scientist at the University of Copenhagen, worked with fellow researchers from the United States to analyze 11 billion words in an effort to find out whether there was a difference between the adjectives used to describe men and women in literature. The researchers examined a dataset of 3.5 million books, all published in English between 1900 to 2008.

Investment in the UK's artificial intelligence (AI) companies has reached record levels after the first six months of 2019 saw more investment than the entirety of last year. Venture capitalists had ploughed $1.63bn (£1.32bn) into UK projects by June, surpassing the $1.21bn raised by the end of 2018 and marking a record year for AI funding growth, according to a report from industry body Tech Nation. AI funding has grown for four consecutive years in the UK, placing it third in the world behind the US and China. The UK has played a key role in fostering many notable AI and machine learning companies, including DeepMind, the prolific research lab purchased by Google in 2014 which has partnered with the NHS and Moorfields Eye Hospital to develop diagnostic models. The US has invested $9.7bn into AI thus far in 2019, compared to $8.6bn in 2018, while China is yet to surpass its 2018 total – backing $3.5bn to date compared to its $6.8bn spending last year. The number of AI companies operating in the UK has also grown, from 820 last year to 839 currently.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina's Center for Geospatial Analytics (CGA) are using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to help farmers better adapt their crops to changing climates. Speaking to ZDNet, CGA associate director Ranga Raju Vatsavai said his team of researchers has been working in partnership with Lenovo for the last two years to develop AI and ML solutions to help farmers preemptively identify ways to best optimise water and energy -- and ultimately address the threats to food insecurity. "Our area of research is to extract actionable knowledge from the datasets. Food, energy, and water are a good application because the population is going to reach 10 billion by 2050. Right now, we are utilising 70% of fresh water for agriculture," he said.

That's all well and good, but it does leave us with one small problem: There's not enough brainpower to turn all that information into sound decisions. The Energy Department established its own Artificial Intelligence and Technology Office to coordinate and accelerate the agency's enterprise efforts to leverage the emerging technology, Secretary Rick Perry revealed at a summit in California Friday. "From my perspective, this is a good day to be able to announce the standing up of an office that's really going to have the ability to transform a lot of different areas in this country," Perry said. Speaking in a fireside chat alongside the nation's Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios, Perry elaborated on a wide range of Energy's current AI and machine learning applications and endeavors, including strengthening the nation's national security stance, supporting the nuclear stockpile, enabling the internet of things and much more. The former governor of Texas also highlighted AI-enabled accomplishments across the agency's national labs, where inside experts are building three next-generation exascale computers and conducting advanced research on four of the ten fastest supercomputers in the world. "When I came to [Energy] two and a half years ago, we were number three in the world in supercomputing--behind China, and interestingly, Switzerland. During the last 30 months we have increased the funding for the supercomputing capacity of America by 45%," he said.
