The general premise of this article is different from most of my previous AI Power articles. While most of the articles in this series have related to the near-term struggles for power between organizations and governments with regards to regulation, data, and international policy, this article will focus on the long-term trajectory that AI and technology are headed towards and what that means for the most powerful nations and organizations. In the long term (15-40 years ahead), the power struggles around AI will not end with economic and military competition. Ultimately, AI power will involve determining the trajectory of intelligence itself. This might involve the creation of astronomically powerful artificial general intelligence (AGI) and/or the creation of vastly more capable and powerful cognitively enhanced humans (transhuman transition).
Brain implants could leak people's THOUGHTS to governments or companies, scientists warn
Pioneering brain implants currently used for stroke or epilepsy patients could be used to track people's thoughts - and relay them back to governments or companies. That's the Orwellian warning from scientists at the Royal Society, who say reading chips pose a huge privacy issue. The society has urged the government to launch an inquiry and protect human rights against the commercial development of neural interface software. It comes after both Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg expressed plans to incorporate the technology into their businesses. This would allow users to interact with augmented reality environments using just their brain - no keyboards, touchscreens or hand gestures required.

A recent study into use of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict overall health using 12-lead ECG readings is one of many examples in cardiology where physicians are looking to do just that. Suraj Kapa, MD, cardiac electrophysiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, was the lead investigator of that study and he is the subject of this episode of the DocTalk Podcast. AI is instrumental in providing the country with a competitive advantage. If we're not raising the bar in the United States, other countries will become more adept leaders in the space. AI is a top priority at the federal level right now.
Artificial Intelligence Can Help Doctors Better Detect Heart Attacks
Scientists have developed an artificial intelligence tool that lets doctors determine whether someone is having a heart attack much quicker than current methods. New research published by healthcare firm Abbott shows that its algorithm could enable hospital accident and emergency departments to more accurately identify and treat patients having a cardiac arrest. The study, which involved researchers from the U.S., Germany, U.K., Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand and more than 11,000 patients, found that AI could provide doctors a more comprehensive analysis of the probability that a patient was having a heart attack. Agim Beshiri, a senior medical director at Abbott, said: "AI technology has the capability to consider many variables, characteristics and data points and combine them in seconds into meaningful results. "Because of today's advancements in computational power and AI applications, healthcare stands to benefit greatly by this approach where clinicians have to do this with their patients every day." Developed by a team of physicians and statisticians at Abbott, the algorithm uses machine learning techniques to enable a more individualized calculation of a person's heart attack risk. The technology aims to improve and quicken heart attack diagnosis by analyzing extensive datasets and identifying factors such as age, sex and a person's specific troponin levels (a cardiac biomarker). Abbott said the algorithm is designed to help address two barriers that exist today for doctors looking for more individualized information when diagnosing heart attacks. The first is that international guidelines for using high sensitive troponin tests don't always account for personal factors, impacting test results. And the second is that while these guidelines recommend that doctors carry out troponin testing at fixed times, they don't consider a person's age or sex and put patients into a one-size-fits-all situation. However, Abbott's algorithm differs from existing approaches as it takes into consideration personal factors and troponin blood test results over time Beshiri added: "The World Heart Organization estimates that 17.9 million people die from cardiovascular disease each year, and 85% are due to heart attacks and strokes.
The Potential Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) On Our National Elections: How AI Could Impact Voters 'Decisions and How it Helps Candidates Win Votes
In developing countries especially Liberia, when elections are held, voters' decisions are never based on or guided by any solid intelligence or knowledge about the candidate or his/her policies. In fact, it is a common phenomenon to see citizens base their voting decisions on factors such as: the candidate's popularity, political affiliation, ethnic or religious values, emotions, tribalism, political rhetoric, candidate's educational background, or the amount of money (aka CASH VIOLENCE), that the candidate spends on them (voters). Arguably, this could be attributed to poverty and illiteracy. And so, candidates especially politicians, take advantage of these social and economic challenges, to campaign using lies, empty promises and commitments which they cannot fulfill after winning elections. When this happens, voters would have to wait for those elected officials to complete their tenure, before getting another opportunity to vote for a new group of leaders in hopes that "GOD" might send them better leaders, if not a messiah. Because of this, many nations remain underdeveloped, poor, and heavily dependent on international aid.
NHS Users Prefer Talking To AI Virtual Assistants Instead Of Humans
The majority of NHS users would rather discuss their hospital and GP appointments with an artificial intelligence service instead of a human. That's according to new research from technology startup EBO.ai, which explores the growing role digital communication tools play in the NHS. It found that more than three quarters (76%) of NHS users would be happy to receive automated reminders from an AI-powered virtual assistant, compared to the 58% who'd rather interact with a human. Figures from NHS England claim that missed appointments cost the health service over £216 million annually, and many people believe that AI technology could help minimize this cost. Dr. Gege Gatt, CEO of EBO.ai, said: "The NHS has already invested millions in the latest technologies, but the enormous potential of AI remains largely untapped. "The adoption we have seen thus far has focused on primary patient care including assessment and diagnosis, but AI can improve patient experiences outside the treatment room too." "Virtual assistants help patients manage their care 24/7, with no need to wait for opening hours or spend time on hold in a phone queue.
Microsoft president pens book on Artificial Intelligence and digital privacy threats
