NASA Robots Rove Through Caves for Underground DARPA Competition (Video)

Robots from all over the world are about to go on a subterranean adventure, competing against each other in mining tunnels to determine which ones can best navigate and find objects underground and do so autonomously. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is hosting the Subterranean Challenge Systems Competition on Aug. 15-22 in Pittsburgh as a way to develop technology for the military and first responders to map and search subterranean areas. A team led by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) will be one of 11 teams taking part in the competition with wheeled rovers, drones and climbing robots that can rise on pinball-flipper-shaped treads to scale obstacles, NASA officials said in a statement. A team from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is taking part in the underground competition on August 15-22. The same technology applied in the competition underground can also be utilized in space for future NASA missions that explore caves and lava tubes on other planets.

In his new book, Tools and Weapons, Smith wrote about what happened when his company introduced a new chatbot in March 2016 that was meant to interact with young adults and teenagers on social media. "The chatbot seems to have filled a social need in China, with users typically spending fifteen to twenty minutes talking with XiaoIce about their day, problems, hopes, and dreams," Smith and his co-author wrote in the book.

The teams using Zone7 are able to identify the correlations between injuries and the performance data thus improving their players and team results. Zone7 not only notifies users (coaches and fitness trainers) โ€“ via a dedicated mobile app โ€“ of the injury risk levels for all players in the quad, but provides actionable insights on the risk factors, causes and kind of injuries and, most of all, offers recommendations to adapt the work load to the current state of health of the athletes in order to bring her/him back to the safe zone.

'Dr Google' is already well established in patients' minds, and now they have a host of apps using artificial intelligence (AI), allowing them to input symptoms and receive a suggested diagnosis or advice without the need for human interaction. And policymakers are on board. Matt Hancock is the most tech-friendly health secretary ever, NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens wants England to lead the world in AI, and the prime minister last month announced ยฃ250m for a national AI lab to help cut waiting times and detect diseases earlier. Amazon even agreed a partnership with NHS England in July to allow people to access health information via its voice-activated assistant Alexa.

AI2's program, Aristo, not only passed but also excelled on a standardized eighth-grade science test. The machine, the Times heralded, "is ready for high school science. Study Finds Few Workers Understand How AI Affects Them at Work

While we know many technology and solutions providers are building machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) into their solutions, apps and platforms, the concept of what employees think about AI is less well understood. In the contact center, many solutions โ€“ most notably quality monitoring and workforce management โ€“ employ AI to analyze data, make predictions, and recommend next-best actions. In workforce management, the goal is to find hidden patterns in the historical data used to generate forecasts for volume and work time. These are all very employee-centric solutions, yet new research from Genesys (News - Alert) has found that few employees understand how AI affects them. The Genesys research was drawn from a study of broad attitudes of 1,103 employers and 4,207 employees in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia and New Zealand regarding the current and future effects of AI on their workplaces.

iPhone 11: Apple launches new Pro smartphones with better cameras

Apple has launched its latest iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max featuring new cameras, improved screens, faster processors and longer battery life. Announced at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California on Thursday, the iPhone 11 series of smartphones carries on where the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR left off last year. The new iPhones feature similar designs and screen sizes with slim bezels and the Face ID notch at the top, which was first introduced in 2017 with the iPhone X. A variety of new colours will also be available, with a new matt finish on the back of the iPhone 11 Pro. The iPhone Pro will be available in two sizes, with either a 5.8-inch (147mm) or 6.5-inch (165mm) screen. The improved Super Retina XDR OLED displays have a higher resolution, are brighter and have better colour, but are more efficient on battery.

In this talk I will show data engineers and architects how to run real-time TensorFlow Inception Image Recognition on images captured by remote sensors and images in tweets. In the same flow I will also demonstrate how to apply real-time sentiment analysis and intelligent routing of data to Phoenix, Email and Slack. I will elaborate on a number of different sentiment analysis frameworks available for use within Apache NiFi including Python NLTK, Stanford CoreNLP, Python SpaCy and Python TextBlob. This talk will be a deep dive into how to manage complex dataflow pipelines ingesting from multiple streaming sources including social, public open data feeds, logs, drones, RDBMS and IoT with transformations, deep learning, machine learning and business rules. Data engineers will be shown the power of Apache NiFi for loading diverse sources of data, applying transformations in-stream, routing based on attributes, adding sentiment data to workflows, running deep learning algorithms in stream and storing data into Apache Phoenix on HBase.
