Enabling Semantic Data Access for Toxicological Risk Assessment

Experimental effort and animal welfare are concerns when exploring the effects a compound has on an organism. Appropriate methods for extrapolating chemical effects can further mitigate these challenges. In this paper we present the efforts to (i) (pre)process and gather data from public and private sources, varying from tabular files to SPARQL endpoints, (ii) integrate the data and represent them as a knowledge graph with richer semantics. This knowledge graph is further applied to facilitate the retrieval of the relevant data for a ecological risk assessment task, extrapolation of effect data, where two prediction techniques are developed.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge say they designed a machine learning algorithm that predicts the results of complex chemical reactions way better than trained chemists. In fact, the artificial intelligence had a 90 percent success rate. So why does this help humans? The researchers found that the A.I could predict a sequence of reaction leading to a desired product. This basically gives chemists printed out directions on how to come up with new medicine.

Researchers at Plymouth University in England reported this week that primates left alone with a computer attacked the machine and failed to produce a single word. "They pressed a lot of S's," researcher Mike Phillips said Friday. A group of faculty and students in the university's media program left a computer in the monkey enclosure at Paignton Zoo in southwest England, home to six Sulawesi crested macaques.
Zomato lays off 541 staffers, says blame it on automation and Artificial Intelligence
Food delivery platform Zomato on Saturday said that it has laid off 541 people -- 10 per cent of the company's strength -- across customer, merchant and delivery partner support teams. The reason behind the move is an improved Zomato platform with Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven bots and automation in resolving customer queries that has led to an overall reduction in direct order-related support queries, the company said in a statement. "While this has been a painful decision, to make the transition smoother, we have extended between two-month months severance pay (based on tenure), family health insurance cover (till the end of January 2020) and career fair opportunities with companies," said Zomato. The company, which is at the loggerheads with the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) over deep discounts in its fine-dining Gold programme, claimed it has improved the speed of service resolution and now only 7.5 per cent of its orders need support (down from 15 per cent in March). "Over the last few months, we have seen our technology products and platforms evolve and improve significantly. This has led to an overall reduction in direct order-related support queries," said the company.
