Video game retailer GameStop closing 180 to 200 stores globally
Over 7,000 store closings have already been announced in 2019. On the same day Apple unveiled the launch date of its subscription service Arcade, brick-and-mortar video game hub GameStop announced store closures. During Tuesday's quarterly earnings call with analysts, GameStop chief financial officer Jim Bell said the company was "on track to close between 180 and 200 underperforming stores globally by the end of this fiscal year." Bell also said there have been 195 store closures since last year. How many stores could close in the U.S. was not disclosed.
Google, Mayo Clinic strike sweeping partnership on patient data
Mayo Clinic, one of medicine's most prestigious brands, announced Tuesday that it has struck a sweeping partnership with Google to store patient data in the cloud and build products using artificial intelligence and other technologies to improve care. The 10-year partnership is a testament to Google's expanding role in the U.S. health care system and gives Mayo greater access to the engineering talent and computing resources it needs to embed its expertise in algorithms and commercial devices. Google said it will open a new office in Rochester, a city whose economy, and very identity, is inextricably linked with Mayo, which invented the medical record more than a century ago and is now seeking to mine its data for new insights into patient care. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The deal is driven in part by Mayo's desire to expand its use of artificial intelligence, which relies on modern computing environments where data can be securely shared and manipulated by physicians and researchers.

Big Data, Cybersecurity, IoT Startups Encouraged to Apply to GENIUS NY Unmanned Systems Accelerator Program
SYRACUSE, NY – The GENIUS NY program, the largest unmanned systems accelerator in the world, is now opening its applications to include startups in big data (smart cities, cybersecurity) and internet of things (IoT) (smart devices, AI). GENIUS NY is CenterState CEO's in-residence business accelerator program at The Tech Garden in Central New York. The program invests $3 million in five early stage companies each year, while also providing incubator space, business programming, mentors and advisers, and resources. Now in its third year, it has already invested $9 million in 17 startups. Applications are open through Oct.1, 2019.

Artificial intelligence may improve kidney disease diagnosis
Washington D.C. [USA], Sept 7 (ANI): Researchers discovered that modern machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence may augment the traditional way of diagnosing kidney disease. Pathologists often classify various kidney diseases on the basis of visual assessments of biopsies from patients' kidneys; however, machine learning has the potential to automate and augment the accuracy of classifications. In one study, a team led by Pinaki Sarder, PhD and Brandon Ginley, BS (Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo) developed a computational algorithm to detect the severity of diabetic kidney disease without human intervention. The algorithm examined a digital image of a patient's kidney biopsy at the microscopic level and extracted information on glomeruli, the small blood vessels of the kidney that filter waste from the blood for excretion. These structures are known to become progressively damaged and scarred over the course of diabetes, reported the study published in the journal -- journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Teaching technological stewardship makes future engineers more agile and responsible
The scale, pace and breadth of technological development in artificial intelligence, robotics, computing, biotechnology, materials science and beyond have ushered in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In an interview with journalist Thomas Friedman, Google executive Eric Teller argues that humanity's 21st century challenge is to become as good at shaping the positive impacts of technologies as we are at inventing the technologies in the first place. Teller says the problem is that the political, economic, legal, organizational and educational systems in which we operate are not agile enough to respond to the scale and pace of technological change. My professional life is focused on how to educate aspiring engineers to be agile. I teach ethics, professionalism and communication in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University.
Big Data Analytics and Machine Learning Workshop at Illinois Tech
The Department of Computer Science will host a workshop on Big Data Analytics at Illinois Tech from October 1-2 (10 a.m.–4 p.m.). This workshop will introduce scalable data analytics and machine learning. It is a two-day, hands-on workshop using Hadoop, Spark and TensorFlow. There are no prerequisites, although some familiarity with Python would be helpful. The event is free of charge, but seating is limited, so registration is first-come.
Verily and iRhythm To Redefine AFib Diagnosis with Data Analytics and AI
Alphabet's Verily Life Sciences and iRhythm Technologies are bringing together data analytics and artificial intelligence to improve the condition of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) patients. "We expect … that [in] a two-year-time frame that we will be showing the product from this collaboration," Karti, told MD DI. San Francisco-based iRhythm is a company known for operating in the intersection of cardiology and AI. The firm has developed Zio Patch XT, a wearable technology that can monitor heart rate activity for up to 14 days. Karti said the collaboration will focus on asymptomatic patients that potentially have AFib. "This [collaboration] is aimed at a very significant patient population," he said.
