Shape Security hits $1B valuation with $51M Series F – TechCrunch
Anti-fraud startup Shape Security has tipped over the $1 billion valuation mark following its latest Series F round of $51 million. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company announced the fundraise Thursday, bringing the total amount of outside investment to $183 million since the company debuted in 2011. C5 Capital led the round, along with several other new and returning investors, including Kleiner Perkins, HPE Growth and Norwest Ventures Partners. Shape Security protects companies against automated and imitation attacks, which often employ bots to break into networks using stolen or reused credentials. Shape uses artificial intelligence to discern bots from ordinary users by comparing known information such as a user's location, and collected data, like mouse movements, to shut down attempted automated logins in real time.

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State University scientists are working toward a future in which farmers can use unmanned aircraft to spot, and even predict, disease and stress in their crops. Their vision relies on machine learning, an automated process in which technology can help farmers respond to plant stress more efficiently. Arti Singh, an adjunct assistant professor of agronomy, is leading a multi-disciplinary research team that recently received a three-year, $499,845 grant from the U.S Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture to develop machine learning technology that could automate the ability of farmers to diagnose a range of major stresses in soybeans. The technology under development would make use of cameras attached to unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, to gather birds-eye images of soybean fields. A computer application would automatically analyze the images and alert the farmer of trouble spots.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Waymo is exploring deploying its self-driving technology in the trucking industry, CEO John Krafcik said on Thursday, as it works with industry partners to seize a commercial opportunity from a looming shortage of human drivers. Waymo, backed by Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google, has so far focused on so-called robotaxis but, in remarks prepared for a speech to the Frankfurt motor show, Krafcik said the self-driving technology, Waymo Driver, was also suited to steering road freight. "Ride-hailing is an important application of our Driver," Krafcik told political and industry leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, at the event's official opening. "Our technology can also make trucking safer and stronger, and fill a pressing need for more drivers in many parts of the world. "We've already conducted road tests of the Waymo Driver in Class 8 trucks across the U.S., and we're working closely with the ecosystem -- shippers, truck makers, and Tier One suppliers -- to ensure a successful deployment." Industry experts and analysts forecast a severe shortage of truck drivers in aging societies, including Germany, leading mobility players including Uber (UBER.N) to develop applications that aim to boost the sector's efficiency.
