Fukushima Prefecture sets sights on flying cars to boost recovery and local industry

The Fukushima Prefectural Government is leading a collaborative effort involving companies from different industries and a robotics testing field to invent a flying car. In early August, the research center at the test field began accepting applications for four additional companies. The prefecture is focusing on efforts to attract companies to the site, which remains the only facility in the country where development and testing can all be done at the same site. The prefecture hopes to create synergies among various businesses and local parts suppliers and eventually build one of the country's largest industrial centers in Fukushima. Fukushima Gov. Masao Uchibori introduced the concept in Tokyo during a conference on flying car development organized by the industry ministry on Aug. 2. The central government is in the process of putting together a plan to build a working flying car by 2023.

He believes AI offers new building blocks that, when applied to raw publicly available data, will help America's governments achieve that goal like never before. Kundra mentioned, for example, how applying the nascent tech to health clinic data could help predict the performance of physicians and outcomes of the clinic. He also said applying artificial intelligence to the government's many raw data sets could help feds reach stronger implementation around various IT projects. Participate to the HARVIS Advisory Board Meeting in Toulouse! - Harvis project

The meeting will be held on the 26th of September at ENAC's Facilities, 7 av. The overall objective of HARVIS project is to identify how cognitive computing algorithms, implemented in a digital assistant, could support the decision making of a single pilot in complex situation. The project will produce a roadmap to help the EU and Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking orient the research and development in the next decade. To get input, suggestions and comments from the aviation community, the project decided to involve various stakeholders, like members of the industry, pilots, professional drivers, and professional users of AI and digital assistance in complex systems, through face-to-face meetings, bilateral interviews and surveys. During this First Meeting, several use cases will be described to illustrate how a future digital assistant implemented with artificial intelligence could be helpful.


Development and Validation of a Deep Learning System to Detect Glaucomatous Optic Neuropathy

Question How does a deep learning system compare with professional human graders in detecting glaucomatous optic neuropathy? Findings In this cross-sectional study, the deep learning system showed a sensitivity and specificity of greater than 90% for detecting glaucomatous optic neuropathy in a local validation dataset, in 3 clinical-based datasets, and in a real-world distribution dataset. The deep learning system showed lower sensitivity when tested in multiethnic and website-based datasets. Meaning This assessment of fundus images suggests that deep learning systems can provide a tool with high sensitivity and specificity that might expedite screening for glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Importance A deep learning system (DLS) that could automatically detect glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) with high sensitivity and specificity could expedite screening for GON. Objective To establish a DLS for detection of GON using retinal fundus images and glaucoma diagnosis with convoluted neural networks (GD-CNN) that has the ability to be generalized across populations. Design, Setting, and Participants In this cross-sectional study, a DLS for the classification of GON was developed for automated classification of GON using retinal fundus images obtained from the Chinese Glaucoma Study Alliance, the Handan Eye Study, and online databases.

Jack Ma has stepped down from the position of chairman at the company he co-founded exactly 20 years ago. Ma announced his retirement plans last year, saying at the time he wanted to spend more time focusing on education. "After tonight I will start a new life," Ma reportedly said at Tuesday's event. "I do believe the world is good, there are so many opportunities, and I love excitement so much, which is why I will retire early." His retirement was not the end of an era, the former English teacher said when he announced he was stepping down, but "the beginning of an era," adding also at the time, "I love education".

First robot now working at a Welsh council

Neath Port Talbot Council is understood to have become the first local authority in Wales to use a robot to process back office administration. The council has been trialling the new technology, known as Robotics Process Automate (RPA), to process Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and update employee information. At a personnel committee meeting head of resources Sheenagh Rees told councillors the robot had helped clear a backlog of data inputting within a matter of weeks. She said: "Since 2013 there has been a 50% reduction of administration staff in HR but we have only had increasing demand for our services. "The reason we were interested in using RPA was because it could help us deal with a high volume of work we weren't able to do.
