The physicians providing their patients with artificial intelligence predictions must make sure that the patients are thoroughly educated about the various pros and cons of the forecast. AI promotes the welfare of patients, but doctors must also recognize its risks and then proceed with caution. FREMONT, CA: The usage of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine is creating great enthusiasm and hope for the advancement of treatment in the future. For example, scientists are using machine learning to develop a tool that will help them make decisions for cancer treatment. They hope that the computers will be able to analyze radiological images and recognize the cancerous tumors that will respond to chemotherapy and the ones which will not. Having said this, the use of AI in the medical sector can also raise many legal and ethical challenges.


HUG to become first university hospital using IBM's AI tool to personalise cancer treatment

IBM Watson Health announced yesterday at the Intelligent Health 2019 summit on AI in Basel that it has signed a partnership with the university hospital in Geneva (Hôpitaux universitaires de Genève, HUG) to implement and use IBM's Watson for Genomics, making it the first university hospital in Switzerland and Europe to use the tool. IBM Watson for Genomics will empower oncologists in Geneva to come up with better-informed diagnoses faster. Deploying information extracted from peer-reviewed articles and validated by experts, the solution generates a report for clinicians that matches genetic alterations in a patient's tumour with the most relevant therapies and clinical trials. In 1950, it took about 50 years for it to double, and there are estimates reckoning that by 2020 this will have come down to three months. This makes it impossible for clinicians to stay on top of current research.


Air Force unveils strategy for artificial intelligence

Why facial recognition's racial bias problem is so hard to crack

Jimmy Gomez is a California Democrat, a Harvard graduate and one of the few Hispanic lawmakers serving in the US House of Representatives. But to Amazon's facial recognition system, he looks like a potential criminal. Gomez was one of 28 US Congress members falsely matched with mugshots of people who've been arrested, as part of a test the American Civil Liberties Union ran last year of the Amazon Rekognition program. Nearly 40 percent of the false matches by Amazon's tool, which is being used by police, involved people of color. Supercomputers Pave the Way for New Machine Learning Approach

New deep learning models predict the interactions between atoms in organic molecules. These models, which were generated using supercomputers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, help computational biologists and drug development researchers better understand and treat disease. According to a release issued earlier this month by the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), researchers have developed a machine learning approach called transfer learning that lets them model novel materials by learning from data collected about millions of other compounds. The new approach can be applied to new molecules in milliseconds, enabling research into a far greater number of compounds over much longer timescales. The new technique, called ANI-1ccx potential, promises to advance the capabilities of researchers in many fields and improve the accuracy of machine learning-based potentials in future studies of metal alloys and detonation physics.
