A doctor in India has performed a series of five percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures on patients who were 20 miles away from him. The feat was pulled off using a precision vascular robot developed by Corindus. The results of the surgeries, which were successful, have just been published in EClinicalMedicine, a spin-off of medical journal The Lancet. The feat is an example of telemedicine, an emerging field that leverages advances in networking, robotics, mixed reality, and communications technologies to beam in medical experts to remote locations for everything from consultations to surgical procedures. Telemedicine, which could decentralize healthcare by distributing doctors into local communities virtually, could ease shortages of nurses and doctors and potentially cut healthcare costs.

Mindtree, a global technology services and digital transformation company, today revealed the findings of its recent survey of AI usage across enterprises. The study found most businesses are well underway with AI experimentation, but many still lack an understanding of the use cases to deliver business value and the data infrastructures for making AI a success across the enterprise on a sustainable basis. The survey, which gathered data from 650 global IT leaders from key business markets, found 85% of organisations have a data strategy and 77% have implemented some AI-related technologies in the workplace, with 31% already seeing major business value from their AI efforts. Organisations are achieving their vision to industrialize AI, but many can do more to gain real business value. When implementing an AI strategy, there's a pressing need for use cases to demonstrate business value.

In the email thread, leaked by MIT alum Salam Jie Gano to VICE on Friday, Stallman argued that the late Marvin Minsky – an AI pioneer who died in 2016 and is accused of assaulting one of Epstein's victims, Virginia Giuffre, - had not actually assaulted anyone. Colorectal cancer is the third-most common cancer worldwide, and it spreads to the liver in about half the patients. Kazemier, who specializes in liver surgery, says the best way to treat this type of cancer is to remove it. But some tumors are too large to be removed, and these patients must undergo systemic therapy, such as chemotherapy to shrink the tumors. After a period of treatment, tumors are manually evaluated using computerized tomography (CT) scans. At that time, medical professionals can see if a tumor shrunk or changed in appearance.

Since Siri debuted on the iPhone 4s back in 2011, voice assistants have gone from unworkable gimmick to the basis for smart speaker technology found in one in six American homes. "Before Siri, when I talked about [what I do] there were blank stares," Tom Hebner, head of innovation at Nuance Communications, which develops cutting edge A.I. voice technology, told Digital Trends. "People would say, 'Do you build those horrible phone systems? That was one group of people's only interaction with voice technology." According to eMarketer forecasts, almost 100 million smartphone users will be using voice assistants by 2020.

Researchers have harnessed the power of artificial intelligence to decode x-ray images of the Ghent Altarpiece, the 15th-century masterpiece by brothers Hubert van Eyck and Jan van Eyck at the St. Bavo Cathedral in Belgium. Being able to read the x-rays can help identify damage to the painting by showing areas where varnish or overpainting hides cracks, paint loss, or other structural issues. The scans can also teach researchers about the artists' working methods, revealing the physical structure of the canvas or panel and its supports, as well as the different layers of paint used in its creation. But because the Ghent Altarpiece's panels are double sided, it has been difficult to parse the x-ray images. A newly developed algorithm has allowed scientists to deconstruct the data to create two distinct images.
