Three decades and hundreds of millions of lines of computer code after graduating from the Milwaukee School of Engineering, NVIDIA's Dwight Diercks returned today to celebrate a donation that will put his alma mater at the forefront of AI undergraduate education. Diercks, who grew up the son of a mailman, working on his family's pig farm in Red Wing, Minnesota, came to NVIDIA as its 22nd employee. Today, he oversees a team of some 5,000 software engineers around the world who ship tens of millions of lines of code each month that help accelerate the world's computing. Diercks' $34 million gift, the largest from an alum in MSOE's 116-year history, is the keystone in the school's efforts to infuse its engineering program with artificial intelligence. Two years ago, MSOE became one of the very few programs, together with Carnegie Mellon, to offer a computer science degree focused on AI.

Adversarial Robustness 360 Toolbox v1.0: A Milestone in AI Security
Next week at AI Research Week, hosted by the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab in Cambridge, MA, we will publish the first major release of the Adversarial Robustness 360 Toolbox (ART). Initially released in April 2018, ART is an open-source library for adversarial machine learning that provides researchers and developers with state-of-the-art tools to defend and verify AI models against adversarial attacks. ART v1.0 marks a milestone in AI security, introducing new features that extend ART to conventional machine learning models and a variety of data types beyond images: The number of reports on real-world exploitations using adversarial attacks against AI is growing, as in the case of anti-virus software, highlighting the importance of understanding, improving and monitoring the adversarial robustness of AI models. ART provides a comprehensive and growing set of tools to systematically assess and improve the robustness of AI models against adversarial attacks, including evasion and poisoning. In evasion attacks, the adversary crafts small changes to the original input to an AI model in order to influence its behaviour.
First long-distance heart surgery performed via robot ZDNet
A doctor in India has performed a series of five percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures on patients who were 20 miles away from him. The feat was pulled off using a precision vascular robot developed by Corindus. The results of the surgeries, which were successful, have just been published in EClinicalMedicine, a spin-off of medical journal The Lancet. The feat is an example of telemedicine, an emerging field that leverages advances in networking, robotics, mixed reality, and communications technologies to beam in medical experts to remote locations for everything from consultations to surgical procedures. Telemedicine, which could decentralize healthcare by distributing doctors into local communities virtually, could ease shortages of nurses and doctors and potentially cut healthcare costs.
Mindtree Study: Businesses Gaining Value From Artificial Intelligence Experimentation
Mindtree, a global technology services and digital transformation company, today revealed the findings of its recent survey of AI usage across enterprises. The study found most businesses are well underway with AI experimentation, but many still lack an understanding of the use cases to deliver business value and the data infrastructures for making AI a success across the enterprise on a sustainable basis. The survey, which gathered data from 650 global IT leaders from key business markets, found 85% of organisations have a data strategy and 77% have implemented some AI-related technologies in the workplace, with 31% already seeing major business value from their AI efforts. Organisations are achieving their vision to industrialize AI, but many can do more to gain real business value. When implementing an AI strategy, there's a pressing need for use cases to demonstrate business value.
