These research-based efforts were seen earlier last week, as a brand new'artificial intelligence powered X-ray device' that GE Healthcare claimed could reduce the time interval in detecting a collapsed lung by a staggering factor of 32, from 8 hours to 15 minutes, was cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). GE Healthcare CEO Kieran Murphy, in an interview with CNBC, said, "The health-care industry is producing huge amounts of data from images to digital health records, we strongly believe that you have to turn that data into information and insight to improve outcomes." The device, coined the'Critical Care Suite', utilizes artificial intelligence-based algorithms to scan X-ray images and detect cases of collapsed lung. One can only assume that deep learning algorithms are put in use to identify trends and patterns in the data sets that Kieran Murphy mentions, and is assessed in its efficacy to spot recurrent themes in a new sample of data. When the AI system has reason to suspect any condition, the scan is sent off to a radiologist as a confirming measure, and as such this is another example of AI-assisted healthcare, not AI-led, as is the reasonable role of artificial intelligence given its youth in the healthcare industry.

At Locarno last year to present sofy.tv, a VOD service for short films, Arpa recalled, "I was approached by industry professionals, mostly producers and distributors, who asked me if the AI developed for sofy could be used for their own purposes, to help them predict a movie's outcome. A few directors also approached me, although they were much more skeptical at first."


Ex-Google worker fears 'killer robots' could cause mass atrocities

A new generation of autonomous weapons or "killer robots" could accidentally start a war or cause mass atrocities, a former top Google software engineer has warned. Laura Nolan, who resigned from Google last year in protest at being sent to work on a project to dramatically enhance US military drone technology, has called for all AI killing machines not operated by humans to be banned. Nolan said killer robots not guided by human remote control should be outlawed by the same type of international treaty that bans chemical weapons. Unlike drones, which are controlled by military teams often thousands of miles away from where the flying weapon is being deployed, Nolan said killer robots have the potential to do "calamitous things that they were not originally programmed for". Nolan, who has joined the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots and has briefed UN diplomats in New York and Geneva over the dangers posed by autonomous weapons, said: "The likelihood of a disaster is in proportion to how many of these machines will be in a particular area at once. What you are looking at are possible atrocities and unlawful killings even under laws of warfare, especially if hundreds or thousands of these machines are deployed. "There could be large-scale accidents because these things will start to behave in unexpected ways.

Hummingbird robot using AI to go soon where drones can't

What can fly like a bird and hover like an insect? If drones had this combo, they would be able to maneuver better through collapsed buildings and other cluttered spaces to find trapped victims. Purdue University researchers have engineered flying robots that behave like hummingbirds, trained by machine learning algorithms based on various techniques the bird uses naturally every day. This means that after learning from a simulation, the robot "knows" how to move around on its own like a hummingbird would, such as discerning when to perform an escape maneuver. Artificial intelligence, combined with flexible flapping wings, also allows the robot to teach itself new tricks.

What this will mean, in the short term, is that AI will become significantly more capable, in less time due to dramatically faster prototyping and larger scale training. In addition, there will be a growth in practical applications of AI because the new paradigm of training at the edge avoids the huge upfront costs of centralized training in the cloud. Millions more developers can now participate in advancing AI solutions. Because training can be coordinated between devices using the IoT (Internet of Things), the cloud infrastructure will have a diminished role. One of the early applications of AI in the construction industry is for training workers and improving their skills.

As humans we are able to discern differences among different groups within a collection. We might group a collection by broad groups such as birds versus plants versus animals or detect subtle features to identify different makes and models of cars. Clustering techniques allow us to automate the process and apply them to data where groupings are not immediately obvious. These techniques are used for different purposes such as detecting market segments, identifying properties of online communities, fraud detection, and cybersecurity. Srini Anand is a Data Scientist at Ameritas Life Insurance Company and holds a Masters degree in Data Science from Indiana University.


Amii Innovates announces first cohort, looks to accelerate AI adoption BetaKit

The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) has launched Amii Innovates, a program aimed to guides teams and businesses in AI adoption. Amii Innovates is one of four program areas within Amii, and works closely with Alberta-based businesses to grow their internal AI capabilities. The organization's Innovation Affiliates were selected based on their readiness for machine intelligence adoption and potential for commercial success. Amii said it has worked collaboratively with these 24 companies over the past year, four of which have already become alumni. "We strongly believe that machine intelligence will be the primary driver of sustainable growth for Alberta's economy."
