Asked if the race to achieve superhuman artificial intelligence (AI) was inevitable, Stuart Russell, UC Berkeley professor of computer science and leading expert on AI, says yes. "The idea of intelligent machines is kind of irresistible," he says, and the desire to make intelligent machines dates back thousands of years. Machines Treating Patients? It's Already Happening
Rayfield Byrd knows when it's time to wake up every morning. The 68-year-old Oakland, Cal., resident hears a voice from the living room offering a cheery good morning. A little after 8 a.m. each day, a small yellow robot named Mabu asks Byrd how he's doing. Byrd has Type 2 diabetes and congestive heart failure, and about three years ago, he had surgery to implant a microvalve in his heart to keep his blood flowing properly. To stay healthy, he takes four medications a day and needs to exercise regularly.
New Amazon facility in Charlotte will hire 1,500 to work with robots
Amazon's first robotics fulfillment center in North Carolina is open for business. Hundreds of employees started work Sept. 2 at the Charlotte facility, which will ship smaller customer orders including books, electronics, household items and toys, according to an Amazon statement. Robots at fulfillment centers can lift heavy items or transport products, Amazon wrote in a blog post. The online retail company plans to have 1,500 full-time employees at the facility near Charlotte Douglas International Airport by the holiday shopping season. The company is still hiring.
Russia and robots: Steel junk or a brave new world?
Russia likes to boast of its robots - but at the same time it seems to have a somewhat troubled relationship with them. It has endured a series of very public robotic mishaps, but all is not lost. Amid much fanfare and praise for the Roscosmos space agency, Russian robot Fedor was launched into space on board a Soyuz 14 spacecraft in August. Fedor made history as the first such robot ever to be sent into space by Russia, and within moments he was reporting on his progress and all was apparently going to plan.But then, mission control in Houston broke the news that Fedor's attempt to dock with the International Space Station (ISS) had to be aborted because of a technical problem. To be fair to Fedor, he was not to blame. Despite state media touting him as a major breakthrough, and other incorrect reports suggesting that he was piloting the spacecraft, he did little but talk.
Cambridge startup building 'robot surgeons' raises ยฃ195m
A Cambridge-based company that has developed what it calls the "next generation" of robot surgeons has raised ยฃ195m ($240m) to fund its global expansion. CMR Surgical, which is one of the UK's fastest-growing firms, says it wants to bring minimally invasive or keyhole surgery to patients around the world. The series C funding round -- the third time it has raised major outside investment -- is Europe's largest-ever private financing round in the medical technology sector, the company said on Tuesday. CMR Surgical's product, known as Versius, mimics the human arm, making it easier for surgeons to be more precise. Because the product is versatile and affordable, the company says, it can be used across "a broad range" of minimal access surgeries, which are associated with less pain, shorter hospital stays, and far fewer complications.
