AIVI Act: Illinois Leading the Way on AI Regulation

Illinois, known as a national test bed for regulation, has struck again in an unlikely area; the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in job interviews. On 11 August, Democratic Governor JB Pritzker signed the Illinois Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act (AIVI Act) into law. Illinois is now the first state to regulate the use of algorithms (interview bots) and other forms of AI to analyse applicants during video interviews from the beginning of 2020. AI in video interviews is a growing trend in hiring practices across the US. Companies rely on video interviews to reduce the stages of these processes to get a sense for candidates, who are asked to answer questions and present themselves just as they would in an in-person interview. Companies typically use the services of third-party platforms such as Hire Vue to conduct video interviews.


How AI/ML Could Return Manufacturing Prowess Back to US

I grew up in a small manufacturing town in Northeast Iowa. The factory in my hometown made tractors (no surprise given that it was Iowa), but eventually the economics of cheap foreign labor and an interconnected global economy caught up with that factory โ€“ as it did with many US-based manufacturers โ€“ and soon the factory closed, and many people were laid off. But the technology world continues to evolve โ€“ especially with respect to IoT, Data Science and AI/ML โ€“ and so comes an opportunity for manufacturing to make a big return to the US. However, tomorrow's manufacturing battles won't be fought with cheap labor. In fact, measuring a country's manufacturing strength by the number of manufacturing jobs is fighting yesteryear's battle.


GrAI Matter Labs Reveals NeuronFlow Technology and Announces GrAIFlow SDK

GrAI Matter Labs (aka GML), a neuromorphic computing pioneer today revealed NeuronFlow โ€“ a new programmable processor technology โ€“ and announced an early access program to its GrAIFlow software development kit. GML's NeuronFlow technology draws from neuromorphic and dataflow paradigms to uniquely solve core problems for real world AI applications. One of the breakthroughs of the technology is dynamic dataflow processing of real-time data, which drastically reduces application latency for autonomous navigation, cognitive voice & video assistants and smart healthcare applications. NeuronFlow utilizes in-memory compute with a mesh of cores and local neuron/synapse memories, avoiding the memory bottleneck of traditional Von Neumann architectures. Evolution of learning is key to better artificial intelligence

Since "2001: A Space Odyssey," people have wondered: could machines like HAL 9000 eventually exist that can process information with human-like intelligence? Researchers at Michigan State University say that true, human-level intelligence remains a long way off, but their new paper published in The American Naturalist explores how computers could begin to evolve learning in the same way as natural organisms did โ€“ with implications for many fields, including artificial intelligence. "We know that all organisms are capable of some form of learning, we just weren't sure how those abilities first evolved. Now we can watch these major evolutionary events unfold before us in a virtual world," said Anselmo Pontes, MSU computer science researcher and lead author. "Understanding how learning behavior evolved helps us figure out how it works and provides insights to other fields such as neuroscience, education, psychology, animal behavior, and even AI. It also supplies clues to how our brains work and could even lead to robots that learn from experiences as effectively as humans do."

Artificial intelligence has multitudinous implications for medicine, and the demand is proof: According to a report from CB Insights (via Becker's Hospital Review), health care AI companies raised $846 million from venture capital firms in the second quarter of 2019, an increase of about 13% year-over-year. One sub-segment that fascinates me personally and professionally is "vision intelligence," which we're pursuing in my newest company. This is the ability to diagnose medical scans even more accurately and faster than the human eye. These programs generally use a method called deep neural networks to train computers to recognize images -- a technique many say is inspired by the biological processes of the brain.


Researchers use machine learning to predict large wildfires

A multidisciplinary group of researchers from the University of California, Irvine created a machine learning model to predict the potential of large wildfires from the time of ignition. The decision classifier model uses a single dataset to predict whether a fire will be large roughly 50% of the time, outperforming more complex models tested by researchers that rely on multiple weather variables. Researchers trained the AI with air moisture data over the span of the average weather report using data from more than 1,100 fire events in Alaska between 2001 and 2017 from the Alaska Large Fire Database. Each fire was then labeled as small, medium, or large. The model is then able to predict approximately 40% of ignitions that lead to large wildfires that account for 75% of burned area during that time period.
