Artificial intelligence is infiltrating every industry, allowing vehicles to navigate without drivers, assisting doctors with medical diagnoses, and mimicking the way humans speak. But for all the authentic and exciting ways it's transforming the tasks computers can perform, there's a lot of hype, too. As Jeremy Achin, CEO of newly minted unicorn DataRobot, puts it: "Everyone knows you have to have machine learning in your story or you're not sexy." The inherently broad term gets bandied about so often that it can start to feel meaningless and can be trotted out by companies to gussy up even simple data analysis. To help cut through the noise, Forbes and data partner Meritech Capital put together a list of private, U.S.-based companies that are wielding some subset of artificial intelligence in a meaningful way and demonstrating real business potential from doing so. One makes robots that can whir around shoppers to help workers restock shelves. Another scans recruiting pitches for unconscious bias. A third analyzes massive data sets to make street-by-street weather predictions. To be included on the list, companies needed to show that techniques like machine learning (where systems learn from data to improve on tasks), natural language processing (which enables programs to "understand" written or spoken language), or computer vision (which relates to how machines "see") are a core part of their business model and future success. Taiwanese electronics giant Delta Electronics, Inc. (TPE:2308) has announced a partnership with Microsoft (NasdaqGS:MSFT) for the former's digital transformation, according to local outlet the Taipei Times. In addition to the digital transformation, Delta Electronics chairman Yancey Hai said the company is "also planning future collaborations with Microsoft in areas such as machine deep learning at its robotics arm with the aim of improving the industrial automation business". "We have set up two AI [artificial intelligence] projects with Microsoft's headquarters in the US... One is aimed at improving the efficiency and noise cancelation of our ultra-thin fans, the other is focused on developing a product quality management system." Virtusa Corporation (NasdaqGS:VRTU) has joined the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL) as an Affiliate Member.


Canadian, Quebec governments pledge $15 million to create AI centre in Montrรฉal BetaKit

The federal and Quebec governments have announced the creation of a Montrรฉal-based international centre of expertise for the advancement of artificial intelligence as part of the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI), which was recently discussed at the G7 Leaders' Summit. "Montrรฉal was ideally suited to host this centre of expertise." The federal government will invest up to $10 million over five years to support the activities of the centre once it commences operations. This commitment is in addition to a $5 million grant previously committed by Quebec, and awarded to Montrรฉal International, to create or attract an international AI organization, bringing total government investment to $15 million over five years. "The Montrรฉal ecosystem is recognized as a leader in AI," said Navdeep Bains, minister of innovation, science, and economic development. "Quebec's collaboration on the centre of expertise in artificial intelligence will contribute significantly to the coordination of efforts on artificial intelligence in order to anticipate issues associated with this technology and promote its responsible adoption, both in Canada and on a global scale."

Yet when you stop to think about it, we all use artificial intelligence (AI) every day. When we Google something, use Siri on our smart phones or ask Alexa a question, we are using AI. Wikipedia states artificial intelligence, sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans. Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is often used to describe machines (or computers) that mimic "cognitive" functions that humans associate with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem solving."

In recent years, Deep Learning (DL) has demonstrated outstanding capabilities in solving 2D-image tasks such as image classification, object detection, semantic segmentation, etc. Not an exception, DL has showed tremendous progresses in applying it to 3D graphic problems. In this post we will explore a recent attempt of extending DL to the Single image 3D reconstruction task, one of the most important and profound challenge in the field of 3D computer graphics. A single image is only a projection of 3D object into a 2D plane, so some data from the higher dimension space must be lost in the lower dimension representation. Therefore from a single-view 2D image, there will never be enough data construct its 3D component.


'The Alexa of chemistry': National Science Foundation puts VCU and partners on fast track to build open network

D. Tyler McQuade, Ph.D., a professor in the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering, is principal investigator of a multi-university project seeking to use artificial intelligence to help scientists come up with the perfect molecule for everything from a better shampoo to coatings on advanced microchips. The project is one of the first in the U.S. to be selected for $994,433 in funding as part of a new pilot project of the National Science Foundation called the Convergence Accelerator (C-Accel). McQuade and his collaborators will pitch their prototype in March 2020 in a bid for additional funding of up to $5 million over five years. Adam Luxon, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemical and Life Science Engineering who has been involved from the beginning, explained it this way: "We want to essentially make the Alexa of chemistry." Just as Amazon, Google and Netflix use data algorithms to suggest customized predictions, the team plans to build an open network that can combine and help users make sense of molecular sciences data pulled from a range of sources including academia, industry and government.


An immersive experience in industry

This summer, four mechanical engineering graduate students had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working in industry. Through the recently launched Industry Immersion Project Program (I2P), students were paired with a company and tasked with tackling a short-term project. Projects in this inaugural year for the program came from a diverse range of industries, including manufacturing, robotics, and aerospace engineering. A flagship program of the MechE Alliance, the I2P Program matches students with a company and project that best fits within their own academic experience at MIT. Projects are designed to be short term, lasting three to six months. Building upon programs such as the Master of Engineering in Advanced Manufacturing and Design and Leaders for Global Operations, which foster collaborations between students and the manufacturing industry, the I2P Program offers graduate students real-world experiences across industries.

Built on Microsoft's modular and customizable AI platform, the all new, reinvigorated Yes Robot enables users to perform financial and non-financial banking transactions by employing conversational AI equipped with extensive financial knowledge, thereby relieving customers from the hassle of navigating through multiple web pages.
