Frederick Mutual enters commercial agreement with AI start-up
Frederick Mutual Insurance Company has signed a commercial agreement with Betterview โ a start-up that develops solutions for the property insurance market โ to leverage the latter's AI-powered property risk management platform. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Through the agreement, Frederick Mutual will utilize Betterview's property analytics to enhance the lifecycle of its policies โ from loss control and underwriting to claims and catastrophe response. Betterview's platform is used by personal lines and commercial lines carriers to identify and score roofing conditions, as well as other related property risks. The start-up makes this possible through the use of machine learning and computer vision to analyze aircraft and satellite imagery.

Cabinet paves way for self-driving vehicles on Japan's roads next year with new rules
The Cabinet on Friday approved rules for operating partially self-driving vehicles, paving the way for the use of autonomous vehicles on public roads. Autonomous driving technology is classified into five levels, ranging from Level 1, which allows either steering, acceleration or braking to be automated, to fully automated Level 5. The government plans to enforce an ordinance defining violations and setting penalties by May next year as it envisions the use of Level 3 vehicles, which allow conditionally automated driving, on expressways in 2020. The newly decided penalties apply to the inappropriate use of Level 3 autonomous driving technologies, which require users to switch to manual operations when preset conditions regarding road type, driving speed, weather, time of day and other factors are no longer met. Violators of the ordinance will face fines of up to ยฅ12,000 ($110) depending on vehicle size.

Each successive generation of Raspberry Pi has brought something new to the table. The latest release, the Raspberry Pi 4, is no exception, upgrading the low-cost single-board computer to include true gigabit Ethernet connectivity, a high-performance 64-bit central processor, more powerful graphics processor, and up to 4GB of RAM. It's a low-cost way to play with RISC-V and Kendryte's KPU, but more expensive than an Arduino for microcontroller use and too limited for general-purpose AI work. Even with these impressive-for-the-price specifications, though, there's something the Raspberry Pi can't easily do unaided: deep learning and other artificial intelligence workloads. The human brain is a funny thing. Certain memories can stick with us forever: the birth of a child, a car crash, an election day. But we only store some details--the color of the hospital delivery room or the smell of the polling station--while others fade, such as the face of the nurse when that child was born, or what we were wearing during that accident. For Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the day he watched AI rise out of a lab is one he'll remember forever. "This was 2012, in a room with a small team, and there were just a few of us," he tells me. An engineer named Jeff Dean, a legendary programmer at Google who helped build its search engine, had been working on a new project and wanted Pichai to have a look. "Anytime Jeff wants to update you on something, you just get excited by it," he says. Pichai doesn't recall exactly which building he was in when Dean presented his work, though odd details of that day have stuck with him. He remembers standing, rather than sitting, and someone joking about an HR snafu that had designated the newly hired Geoffrey Hinton--the "Father of Deep Learning," an AI researcher for four decades, and, later, a Turing Award winner--as an intern. The future CEO of Google was an SVP at the time, running Chrome and Apps, and he hadn't been thinking about AI.
