EPFL develops solution for detecting deepfakes
Deepfakes โ or fake videos produced to look real through the use of artificial intelligence โ pose a growing challenge. That's why an EPFL research group has been teaming up with the Swiss startup Quantum Integrity to develop a deepfake detection solution over the past two years. The team has been awarded an Innosuisse grant starting on 1 October, with deployment as early as next year. Barak Obama insulting Donald Trump, Trump accusing Obama of stealing, and Mark Zuckerberg making worrying claims about how Facebook uses personal data โ fake videoslike these, which look disturbingly real as a result of artificial intelligence, have been spreading across social media over the past few years. Until recently there were still some tell-tale signs that could indicate videos were fabricated, like eyes that never blink.

Stuttgart, Germany, and Yokohama, Japan โ Automated driving technology is gradually providing more and more assistance to the driver โ with the future aim of the car being able to take complete control. But there is more to it than that: "We want to make cars better drivers than people, and in this way to increase road safety. In other words, technology has to work more reliably than people," says the Bosch management board member Harald Krรถger. That presents a major challenge, particularly in terms of surround sensing. The sensing system needs to provide the data and information of what is going on around the vehicle to enable the automated vehicle to choose the appropriate driving decision under the circumstances from a safety standpoint.

At this juncture in the early stages of the AI-powered Fourth Industrial Revolution, a lot of attention has been paid to the possibility that millions of workers will be displaced by automation and robots, raising fears of rising unemployment in the years ahead. However, in the manufacturing industry today, the problem is not one of too many people chasing too few jobs-- it's the opposite. Manufacturing is being transformed by technology at a dramatic pace at a time of near-record low levels of unemployment, leading to a shortage of workers with the required skills for the new era of intelligent manufacturing. Currently, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that there are more than half a million unfilled manufacturing jobs in the United States. This gap is expected to widen significantly as baby boomers retire in increasing numbers over the next few years and the demand for people with the kind of digital skills that the American manufacturing industry requires continues to grow.
Zomato, Swiggy using AI, machine learning to drive more growth
Bengaluru: When food-tech company Zomato let go of around 540 of its support staff last week, it said improvement in its after-sales technology forced its hand. The automation made up for almost 10% of the workforce in certain support roles across Zomato's customer, merchant, and delivery partner teams, redundant. While routine jobs will continue to give way to automation, food-tech companies such as Swiggy and Zomato are increasingly turning to machine learning (ML) and automation to drive their businesses, using years of data accumulated from food orders and user-level consumption patterns. And each customer order is now being influenced by the customer's own previous history of order preferences. Swiggy boasts of more than 1.3 lakh restaurant partners on its platform, while Zomato claims to have added around 1.5 lakh restaurants. With such a large supply base in place, both food-tech apps are now primarily using data to tap demand.
