Mayo Clinic taps Google Cloud as strategic partner to accelerate innovation in AI, analytics and digital tools

Mayo Clinic has entered into a 10-year strategic partnership with Google to use the tech giant's cloud platform to accelerate innovation through digital technologies. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Rochester, Minn.-based hospital said it selected Google Cloud to be the cornerstone of its "digital transformation." As part of the collaboration, Mayo Clinic will store patient data in the cloud and use advanced cloud computing, data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to advance the diagnosis and treatment of disease, hospital executives said in a press release. "Data-driven medical innovation is growing exponentially, and our partnership with Google will help us lead the digital transformation in health care," Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic, said in a statement.

Army to host seminar on artificial intelligence next week; seeks to enhance its lethality

NEW DELHI: With artificial intelligence set to dictate change in the nature of future battlefields, a first-of-its kind thematic seminar is being organised by the Army on September 25, seeking to harness the power of AI to boost the armed forces' combat capabilities, officials said on Friday. The seminar on AI, the first in connection with military field formation, being organised by the South Western Command'Sapta Shakti' of the Army at Hisar Military Station, will also be attended by domain experts from academia and the industry. Artificial intelligence is an emerging, disruptive technology affecting civil and military domains across the globe, a senior army official said. "The aim of the event is to bring together professionals, eminent speakers from the defence industry, academia, defence officers to brainstorm the way ahead with an objective to identify and conceptualise AI-based defence applications and platforms for the future battlefield," he said. South Western Command chief Lt Gen Alok Singh Kler said, disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence will dictate how the future warfare will happen.


Self-driving trucks are being tested on public roads in Virginia

Daimler Trucks and technology firm Torc Robotics have started to test autonomous trucks on public roads in the U.S. The routes are located on highways in southwest Virginia where Torc -- which is part of Daimler Trucks following a majority stake acquisition -- is based. In an announcement Monday, Daimler Trucks said that all of the "automated runs" would need an engineer to oversee the system as well as a safety driver. It added that all safety drivers held a commercial driver's license and had special training in vehicle dynamics and automated systems. The firm said that "months of extensive testing and safety validation" had already been conducted on a closed loop track. "Bringing Level 4 trucks to the public roads is a major step toward our goal to deliver reliable and safe trucks for the benefits of our customers, our economies and society," Martin Daum, a member of the board of management at Daimler with responsibility for trucks and buses, said in a statement.

Researchers at Michigan State University say that true, human-level intelligence remains a long way off, but their new paper published in The American Naturalist explores how computers could begin to evolve learning in the same way as natural organisms did -- with implications for many fields, including artificial intelligence. "We know that all organisms are capable of some form of learning, we just weren't sure how those abilities first evolved. Now we can watch these major evolutionary events unfold before us in a virtual world," said Anselmo Pontes, MSU computer science researcher and lead author. "Understanding how learning behavior evolved helps us figure out how it works and provides insights to other fields such as neuroscience, education, psychology, animal behavior, and even AI. It also supplies clues to how our brains work and could even lead to robots that learn from experiences as effectively as humans do."
