AWS Announces General Availability of Amazon EC2 G4 Instances

G4 instances provide the industry's most cost-effective machine learning inference for applications, like adding metadata to an image, object detection, recommender systems, automated speech recognition, and language translation. G4 instances also provide a very cost-effective platform for building and running graphics-intensive applications, such as remote graphics workstations, video transcoding, photo-realistic design, and game streaming in the cloud. Machine learning involves two processes that require compute – training and inference. Training entails using labeled data to create a model that is capable of making predictions, a compute-intensive task that requires powerful processors and high-speed networking. Inference is the process of using a trained machine learning model to make predictions, which typically requires processing a lot of small compute jobs simultaneously, a task that can be most cost-effectively handled by accelerating computing with energy-efficient NVIDIA GPUs.

Expedia, AI Singapore join forces on AI to improve online searches for Asian travellers TTG Asia

Expedia Group has announced a collaboration with AI Singapore (AISG) – an inter-agency unit tasked to catalyse and grow the country's artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities – under its flagship 100 Experiments (100E) programme to develop an AI solution to transform the online search experience for Asian travellers. The first online travel platform to collaborate with AISG for 100E, Expedia Group will provide a team of experienced engineers, data scientists and marketers to work with the AISG's project lead, project managers and AI apprentices to enhance travel search query understanding and improve the accuracy of search query resolution in Asian languages. Today's search engines are efficient in understanding travel search queries and providing query resolutions in English, as English is the dominant language used online by 25 per cent of all Internet users. However, when dealing with travel search queries conducted in Asian languages such as Japanese, Korean, simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese, the performance of the search engines declines significantly and the accuracy of query resolution dips. For a start, the Expedia Group and AI Singapore project team will leverage natural language processing and machine learning to develop an AI-based model to enhance search query understanding and resolution in the Japanese language, before extending the model to other Asian languages to enhance online search efficiency.


Tesla promises full self-driving cars by year end, but regulators are wary.

Once the update arrives, Tesla vehicles will be able to drive themselves in a city the way they can perform highway cruising now, the company said. That means interpreting stop signs and traffic lights, making sharp turns, and navigating stop-and-go urban traffic and other obstacles -- a far more difficult task than navigating long, relatively straight stretches of highways. Although Tesla's website has promised features as soon as this year including the ability to recognize and react to traffic lights and stop signs, and what it calls "Automatic driving on city streets," the suite would still require a human driver behind the wheel. As soon as next year, Tesla has said, the cars will be able to operate reliably on their own, even allowing the driver to fall asleep. This tiered approach is different from companies such as Waymo, whose sole aim is to launch autonomous vehicles that do not need a driver behind the wheel.


Autism and artificial intelligence: Visiting scholar probes human-robot interaction

Lundy Lewis, an academic and researcher in artificial intelligence and human-robot interaction, is watching a pair of six year-old boys playing with social robots in the gym at CHEO's site for autism in Kanata. Griffin and James Beck are twins. The robot they're interacting with is called Jibo, developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Jibo has no arms or legs and only two joints, one which approximates a neck and another a waist. Despite this, Jibo can pack a lot of emotion into his rotund body. Equipped with facial recognition and a touch screen, Jibo turns his head towards people.


Indian Army set to release AI blueprint soon

In an attempt to match capabilities of adversaries like China, the Indian Army is set to release a blueprint on the setting up of an artificial intelligence system that will reduce human errors and over-dependence on manpower. The AI will be integrated so as to advance surveillance and help mobilise troops quicker, since the army is currently dependent only upon foot patrols in difficult terrains, such as the Chinese frontier. To this end, a seminar is being conducted by the Jaipur-based South Western Command of the Indian Army at Hisar to explore AI based defence applications with experts and industry representatives. It is also intended to be an opportunity to discuss research and development for futuristic weapon platforms.


Canada's Element AI Raises $151M Series B As Country's Startup Scene Heats Up

Montreal-based Element AI, which develops artificial intelligence-powered software solutions, announced this morning it has raised US$151.4 million in a massive Series B round. Founded in 2016 by a team of six partners including serial entrepreneurs Jean-François (JF) Gagné and A.M. Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio, Element AI is described by lead investor Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) as "a company with a commercial focus that anticipates and creates AI products to address clients' needs." In its own words, Element AI "turns research and industry expertise into software solutions that exponentially learn and improve" and are adapted to specific industries with a primary focus on the financial services and supply chain sectors. Its offering, which includes advisory services, AI-enablement tools and products, aims to help large organizations "operationalize AI and create real business impact." Customers include LG and National Bank, among others.
