More than 737 million medical radiological images found on open PACS servers
The experts at Greenbone Networks vulnerability analysis and management company discovered 600 unprotected servers exposed online that contained medical radiological images. The research was conducted between mid-July 2019 and early September 2019. The unprotected medical image storage systems were located in 52 countries, the experts discovered that they were affected by 10,000 vulnerabilities, more than 500 of them rated with the highest severity score (CVSS 10 out of 10). Greenbone Networks researchers analyzed about 2,300 Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) systems exposed online. PACS servers are used in the healthcare industry to archive images created by radiological processes and to make them available to medical staff for analysis and diagnosis. These systems use the DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) standard to manage medical imaging data.

Your wearable or smartwatch can warn you if there is something wrong with your pulse or heart-rate. Additionally, all this information gets recorded. Later, the software after looking at the data can provide you information like: you are likely to run of milk on Wednesday, run out of gas in two weeks, or likely to get a heart attack in three months (so, time for a check-up and take precautions).

Google opens a new AI research center in Bangalore, India
At its annual Google for India event in the capital of New Delhi today, the search giant announced it's opening an AI research center in Bangalore, led by scientist Dr. Manish Gupta, an ACM Fellow and Infosys Foundation Chair Professor at IIIT Bangalore. The center, called Google Research India, will focus on tools that can be used by government and private entities. The company wants to work with local talent in the field of machine learning, computer vision, languages, speech, systems, and several other related areas. Along with Gupta, Google has appointed Professor Milind Tambe from Harvard University as a director of AI for social good. The company said one set of people working at the center will focus on fundamental AI research by publishing papers and building a strong community in the country, while another group will work on big problems in fields like healthcare, and,education, and also apply their ideas to "make apps and services used by billions of people more helpful."
'Ethics In Artificial Intelligence': Six Projects From India Selected For Research Awards By Facebook
To encourage research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) ethics, Facebook has selected six projects from India that will focus on three key areas - governance, cultural diversity and operationalising ethics. The winners declared on Friday (20 September), included the top two submissions in each category. Facebook announced the Ethics in AI research awards in June with a regional focus of India. The proposed budget should be within Rs 10,00,000 to Rs 20,00,000, Facebook said. In the operationalising ethics category, the two selected projects include "Patient-Centric Frameworks for the Evaluation of AI-Enabled Medical Tests" that has Amit Sethi of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT Bombay) as the principal investigator and "Targeted Bias in Indian Media Outlets" that has Animesh Mukherjee of the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) as the principal investigator.

Facebook researchers have developed Fashion, a system that uses artificial intelligence to recommend how to make an outfit more stylish. AI has been slow to penetrate subjective fields like fashion, so Fashion relied on humans to evaluate its suggestions. The technology could be used by digital assistants to provide personal styling or shopping advice. Can a computer learn to tell what is fashionable and what is not? Artificial intelligence researchers at Facebook believe it can.
Mehrdad Jazayeri and Hazel Sive awarded 2019 School of Science teaching prizes
The School of Science has announced that the recipients of the school's 2019 Teaching Prizes for Graduate and Undergraduate Education are Mehrdad Jazayeri and Hazel Sive. Nominated by peers and students, the faculty members chosen to receive these prizes are selected to acknowledge their exemplary efforts in teaching graduate and undergraduate students. Mehrdad Jazayeri, an associate professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and investigator at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research, is awarded the prize for graduate education for 9.014 (Quantitative Methods and Computational Models in Neuroscience). Earlier this year, he was recognized for excellence in graduate teaching by the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and won a Graduate Student Council teaching award in 2016. In their nomination letters, peers and students alike remarked that he displays not only great knowledge, but extraordinary skill in teaching, most notably by ensuring everyone learns the material.

When Rahul Kumar, a daily-wage earner from Patna, got his chest X-ray done after months of coughing, a doctor told him he was suffering from tuberculosis (TB). But when he sought a second opinion, he was told he was fine. "I was asked to get more scans done, but I don't have the money or time to run around for multiple tests," says Kumar, 31. Kumar is one of a large demographic of TB patients in India in whom the disease either goes undetected, or who simply drop off the long and expensive treatment cycle. This, in turn, leads to a greater spread of the disease -- and the possibility of mutated, drug-resistant versions.
