AI gives access to jobs for those excluded from labour market
This was one of the main messages of the keynote address delivered by Gartner group vice president Dr Brian Kropp (pictured) at the global research and advisory firm's ReimagineHR conference at Westminster's Park Plaza hotel yesterday. With nine in 10 organisations investing in AI or having plans to do so, Kropp called on delegates to not just focus on the challenge posed by AI creating or eliminating jobs but to look at how AI can create access to jobs. Kropp gave the example of a cafรฉ in Japan, which has created jobs for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles. ALS sufferers can control a robot from their bed, who then commutes to work on their behalf and serves customers. "Think about that for a second," Kropp told delegates.

In 2017, 201 million people needed humanitarian assistance and 18 million were displaced due to weather related disasters. Many of these disaster-prone areas are literally "missing" from the map, making it harder for first responders to prepare and deliver relief efforts. Since the inception of Tasking Manager, the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) community has mapped at an incredible rate with 11 million square kilometers mapped in Africa alone. However, large parts of Africa with populations prone to disasters still remain unmapped -- 60% of the 30 million square kilometers.
Google's AI Detects 26 Skin Diseases with Accuracy Comparable to Dermatologists - Docwire News
A Google research team has recently created an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can detect 26 different skin diseases with the same accuracy as a licensed dermatologist. This deep learning technology evaluates images and metadata, such as self-reported symptoms and demographic information, to generate a ranked list of possible diagnoses just as a trained professional would. The Google team's findings were covered in a paper titled "A deep learning system for differential diagnosis of skin diseases" and in a blog post penned by, Yuan Liu, PhD, Software Engineer and Peggy Bui, MD, Technical Program Manager, Google Health. With nearly 2 billion patients having some form of skin condition globally and many areas lacking dermatologists, patients must often take such concerns up with their primary care physicians. Research has shown that while dermatologists diagnose these skin conditions with accuracies between 77-96%, the general practitioner does so with only 24-70% accuracy.

Precision medicine has increased survival rates - looking to AI for more
As scientists gain a deeper understanding of cancer, we have begun to tailor treatments to specific types of the disease. By putting a cancer tumor through advanced molecular testing, we can find out what proteins and genes are specific to this particular tumor and match it to the most effective treatment. The results are significant improvements in the survival rates of those patients fortunate enough to have a type of cancer for which a treatment is available. The trouble is, too few patients are so fortunate. Despite a great deal of cancer research conducted over the past few decades, only a handful of targeted therapies have reached clinical practice--between 8-and-15 percent of cancer patients in the US are eligible to receive targeted therapy.
