They are the names of places where people live and work, where there are families and schools. They are the names of places in Afghanistan and Yemen, which are linked by one thing: they have each been the location of drone strikes in the past couple of months.

Artificial intelligence is on a par with human experts when it comes to making medical diagnoses based on images, a review has found. The potential for artificial intelligence in healthcare has caused excitement, with advocates saying it will ease the strain on resources, free up time for doctor-patient interactions and even aid the development of tailored treatment. Last month the government announced ยฃ250m of funding for a new NHS artificial intelligence laboratory. However, experts have warned the latest findings are based on a small number of studies, since the field is littered with poor-quality research. One burgeoning application is the use of AI in interpreting medical images โ€“ a field that relies on deep learning, a sophisticated form of machine learning in which a series of labelled images are fed into algorithms that pick out features within them and learn how to classify similar images.


AI to compose classical music live in concert โ€“ with over 100 musicians

A visionary performance in Armenia will feature a live, AI-composed orchestral score, performed by musicians from around the world. The World Congress of Information Technology (WCIT) has announced that it will be hosting its first concert to be composed entirely by artificial intelligence. The innovative outdoor concert takes place in Armenia as part of the organisation's opening ceremony, and will be performed by the'World Orchestra'. Specially formed for the event, the orchestra has been made up of more than 100 professional musicians โ€“ including 75 from orchestras in the 14 countries that previously hosted WCIT, and 30 from the Armenia State Symphony Orchestra. The unique ensemble will be led by Sergey Smbatyan, a virtuoso violinist and Principal Conductor of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, who also came up with the idea for the show.


AI predicts effectiveness of antidepressants in patients: Study

Houston: Researchers use artificial intelligence (AI) to identify patterns of brain activity that make people less responsive to certain antidepressants. In two studies, one published in the journal American Journal of Psychiatry and another in Nature Human Behavior, the scientists showed they could use imaging of a patient's brain to decide whether a medication is likely to be effective. Both the studies include the latest findings from a large national trial -- EMBARC -- intended to establish objective strategies to treat mood disorders based on biology, and minimize the prescription of treatments in a trial and error fashion. The researchers, including those from UT Southwestern's Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care in the US, plan to develop a range of tests such as brain imaging and blood analyses to improve the odds of finding the best treatment for mood disorders. "We need to end the guessing game and find objective measures for prescribing interventions that will work," said Madhukar Trivedi, who oversees EMBARC.


New Microsoft Report Claims U.K. Is Behind The Rest Of The World On AI

A new report, unveiled October 1 by Microsoft UK, claims that British organizations risk being overtaken by their global counterparts unless the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is accelerated. The report, conducted by YouGov and in partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London, focused on more than 1,000 business leaders and 4,000 employees, and includes interviews with leading industry experts from organizations such as M&S, NatWest, Renault F1 Team, Lloyds Banking Group and the NHS. Its findings demonstrate that organizations currently using AI outperform those that don't by 11.5% but despite this, only 24% have an AI strategy in place.

To passersby, however, we must look like a bunch of adults pointing our smartphones at nothing while shouting about incoming monsters. What we're doing is playing a beta version of Minecraft Earth, an augmented reality (AR) spinoff from the multimillion-selling block-building game โ€“ and very soon, parks all over the world will be filled with people just like us. This month, Minecraft is launching an early-access version of the game in a select few territories around the world, ahead of a global roll-out. Microsoft has yet to reveal exactly when and where, but soon thousands of fans used to playing on their console, PC or tablet, are going to be taking their creations to the streets.


Tencent leads $10 million investment in SenSat to create real-time 'simulated realities'

SenSat, a geospatial technology startup that digitizes real-world places for infrastructure projects, has raised $10 million in a series A round of funding led by Chinese tech titan Tencent, with participation from Russian investment firm Sistema Venture Capital. Founded out of London in 2015, SenSat is setting out to help organizations, such as those working in the construction, mining, and energy industries, create so-called "digital twins" of locations relevant to projects they're working on. The company said that it translates the real world into a version that can be understood by machines and thus suitable for training artificial intelligence (AI) systems. These digital twins are constructed using various different data-types, including real-time data generated from wearables, physical sensors connected to assets on the ground, traffic data, and 3D image data captured from satellites, Lidar, and drones. Indeed, SenSat is actually one of the U.K.'s biggest drone data providers, due in part to its Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) license that enables it to fly fixed-wing drones up to 12km away from the pilot -- in other words, far beyond the controller's line-of-sight.

China's new 500-megapixel 'super camera' can instantly recognize you in a crowd

China is already home to extensive facial recognition technology, using it to identify criminals, monitor students' attention, and even let citizens purchase train tickets. Now, in an attempt to enrich its surveillance arsenal, reseachers from the country have developed a 500 megapixel facial recognition camera capable of capturing "thousands of faces at a stadium in perfect detail and generate their facial data for the cloud while locating a particular target in an instant." The AI-based cloud camera service was developed in collaboration between Shanghai-based Fudan University and Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Changchun, according to Global Times. The "super camera" is also said to have the ability to shoot panoramic photos with a clear image of every single human face, something that can be put to use in extremely crowded public spots. The facial recognition system has been designed keeping national defense, military and public security in mind, the report said, adding it could "serve as a watchdog at military bases, satellite launch bases and national borders to prevent suspicious people and objects from entering or exiting."
