At The Common Good in the Digital Age conference last weekend, Pope Francis warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could, if unchecked by ethics, become "an enemy of the common good". As the Narendra Modi government goes bullish on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, blockchain and data analytics, the daunting task ahead is to train millions of government officials so that these disruptive technologies can be optimised for the benefit of over one billion-plus people. Beyond skilling students, young coders and entrepreneurs in emerging technologies, the onus is now on tech giants to train the men in the system -- especially in the information technology (IT) departments -- and Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is retail giant Amazon's Cloud arm, is set to embark on this journey. There is already a lot of talk happening within the government agencies about the success they have had after moving to cloud. "This is the right time to skill them, train them in AI-enabled Cloud computing so that India can move faster on embracing new-age technologies. We have had successful meetings with senior government leaders on this subject as AWS is already leading in skilling the students and upskilling the workforce in the country," Peter Moore, Regional Managing Director for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Global Public Sector -- APAC and Japan, told IANS.

A level crossing is an important but often dangerous component of rail infrastructure. To rectify the situation, Slovakian IT company GrowthPro has developed Erriate, an AI-based solution that is able to prevent the accidents at level crossings. A lot of rail infrastructure managers spend huge amounts to make level crossings safer for both car and train drivers, pedestrians and train passengers. Usually, they install barriers, signalling equipment or even video cameras. The digital solutions could be a good supplement to these moves and improve safety at the level crossings.

It may be hard to imagine today, but there was a time not too very long ago when data analysts, with a few notable exceptions, were relegated to the hidden recesses of most corporations. Better to toil away in the bowels than to be shown the light of day. For many decades, even as information technology (IT) emerged as a critical business function, data was viewed more as something that firms filed away in vaults for the mandatory seven years to comply with regulators, and not a business asset that could be mined to unlock critical business insights. Data was perceived as the purview of those who were sometimes derisively referred to as data geeks or "propeller heads". This was long before Silicon Valley, or Wall Street, embraced the term "geek".
