AI just as effective as clinicians in diagnostics, study suggests
Artificial intelligence has the potential to be deeply disruptive across the healthcare sector, especially in cutting down administrative waste, streamlining billing, and improving patient matching and population health management. Tech giants like Amazon, Google and Intel are leveraging their hefty AI capabilities as they move into healthcare, and providers and payers become more open to the technology. However, AI's value add in diagnostics, a realm dogged with variability, is unproven though much-hyped among investors and the public. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS researchers vetted more than 20,500 articles published between 2012 and 2019, but only ended up including 1% of them in their meta-analysis. The included studies spanned breast cancer, orthopaedic trauma, respiratory disease, cardiology, facial surgery and more. Of the 82 articles researchers looked at, only 25 validated the AI models externally by using medical images from a different population, and just 14 directly compared clinician and AI diagnostic abilities side by side.

The structural shift in the labour market can be attributed to the technological displacement of mid-skilled jobs. According to a 2018 report by World Economic Forum, machines and algorithms in the workplace are expected to create 133 million new roles but cause 75 million jobs to be displaced by 2020. The opportunity to be had for businesses leading the charge with AI is reshaping the existing workforce to develop more data-driven skill sets and deploying talent that can engage with automated ways of working. As businesses become ever more reliant on AI, there is an increasing amount of pressure on the processes of data capture and integration.
Reproducibility Challenges in Machine Learning for Health
Last year the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared a total of 12 AI tools that use machine learning for health (ML4H) algorithms to inform medical diagnosis and treatment for patients. The tools are now allowed to be marketed, with millions of potential users in the US alone.Because ML4H tools directly affect human health, their development from experiments in labs to deployment in hospitals progresses under heavy scrutiny. A critical component of this process is reproducibility. A team of researchers from MIT, University of Toronto, New York University, and Evidation Health have proposed a number of "recommendations to data providers, academic publishers, and the ML4H research community in order to promote reproducible research moving forward" in their new paper Reproducibility in Machine Learning for Health. Just as boxers show their strength in the ring by getting up again after being knocked to the canvas, researchers test their strength in the arena of science by ensuring their work's reproducibility.

An NETL-sponsored project is leveraging artificial intelligence in a manner that will lead to more efficient, long-lasting and reliable gas turbines to meet America's growing energy needs. As advanced energy systems move toward higher temperatures to boost efficiency and reduce emissions, monitoring their performance under such harsh conditions becomes a challenge. Existing monitoring tools for gas turbines are costly, time-consuming and complicated, involving wires and risks for damage. With funding and guidance from NETL, North Carolina-based Siemens Corp. and its partners are developing smart sensor systems that provide real-time monitoring of gas turbine components, thereby enabling condition-based maintenance and prediction of each component's remaining useful life. Siemens is achieving this by incorporating advanced sensors directly onto gas turbine blades that feature an ultra-high-temperature wireless monitoring and data transfer capability that provides accurate, real-time information up to 1,400 degrees Celsius.
