Apple Maps is improved, but still is no Google Maps
Apple trying to compete with Google, launches major upgrade in maps app. There's so much to like about Apple's new revamp of the long maligned Maps app. Instead of announcing that you have a turn in 1000 feet, Siri tells you, "Turn left at the next light," which is way easier to decipher. It has a visual sheen that just looks better. It lets you look around neighborhoods to get your bearings, something Google has long offered but Apple did not.

Capgemini announces Project FARM an intelligent data platform that aims to help small scale farmers in Kenya resolve the global food shortage
Paris, October 02, 2019 – Capgemini has developed an intelligent data platform called Project FARM (Financial and Agricultural Recommendation Models), which is designed to optimise the agricultural value chain and bolster global food supply. The platform uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to determine farming patterns through big data, generating insights from the data to make recommendations. It uses Machine Learning to make the platform applicable at scale by connecting it with cell phones. This solution has been built in collaboration with Agrics, a social enterprise operating in East Africa, which provides local farmers with agricultural products and services on credit. Global demand for food is anticipated to increase by 60% by 2050[1].
Latvian companies develop AI prototype for waste management
Waste management is one of the world's most pressing issues, however Peruza and Dots, two Latvian companies, have created a prototype through the use of AI to increase the efficiency of plastic waste. Peruza, an equipment manufacturing and process engineering company, has collaborated with Dots, a technology company also based in Latvia, to create a prototype system which is able to recognize and collects various types of packaging materials in an effort to contribute to the EU's upcoming single plastic directive. Peruza had stated that 10 countries within Europe have already implemented deposit return schemes and that we should expect more to come in the future. This is in line with the EU's goal for 2030 for all packaging used in the market to be recyclable or reusable. Robert Dlohi, CEO of Peruza, stated, "The problem of existing devices is that they can collect individual types of packaging. They use a barcode for recognition. Our system can currently recognize, collect and sort 5.0 liter and/or 1.5 liter Pet bottles, and 5 liter plastic bottles, 1.5 liter plastic canisters, as well as aluminum cans, cardboard Tetra Pak, glass bottles and jars."
Novartis, Microsoft collab to 'transform medicine' with AI
Novartis and Microsoft have announced a new collaboration in order to "transform medicine with artificial intelligence." Novartis announced the "important step in reimagining medicine" by founding the Novartis AI innovation lab, choosing Microsoft as its strategic AI and data-science partner. The company says that the new lab aims to bolster Novartis AI capabilities from research through commercialisation and help accelerate the discovery and development of transformative medicines for patients worldwide. As part of the strategic collaboration announced, Novartis and Microsoft have committed to a multi-year research and development effort which will focus on AI empowerment and AI exploration, using the power of AI to tackle some of the hardest computational challenges within life sciences, starting with generative chemistry, image segmentation & analysis for smart and personalised delivery of therapies and optimisation of cell and gene therapies at scale. The companies also announced that they will "collaborate to develop and apply next-generation AI platforms and processes that support future programs across these two focus areas," with the overall investment including project funding, subject-matter experts, technology, and tools.
Red-state Dems worried Trump impeachment will hurt Senate chances; Giuliani considering lawsuits
Here's what you need to know as you start your day ... Red-state Dems worried Trump impeachment push will kill hopes of retaking Senate in 2020 Some red-state Senate Democrats are fretting that the ongoing House impeachment inquiry could expand uncontrollably and become a "kitchen sink" of complaints about President Trump and hurt chances of regaining the Senate majority in 2020, Fox News has learned. Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Jon Tester of Montana specifically expressed concerns and have told Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., that leadership cannot allow liberal Democrats to push for the inquiry to include allegations about Trump illegally using his office to enrich himself or relitigate findings from former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian election meddling in 2016. In other developments: Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani said Tuesday he's considering individual lawsuits against House Democrats for allegedly violating the constitutional and civil rights of the president and members of his administration amid new congressional inquiries and subpoenas resulting from a whistleblower's complaint. Eliot Engel, Adam Schiff and Elijah Cummings, the Democratic chairmen of three House committees, informed the State Department in a letter late Tuesday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appears to have a "conflict of interest" and might now be a "fact witness" in their ongoing impeachment inquiry, after Pompeo accused Dems of trying to "bully" foreign service officers into testifying. Eric Holder says Barr is'paying a price' by spearheading a probe of the Russia investigation Former Attorney General Eric Holder told Fox News on Tuesday that current Attorney General William Barr "is paying a price" and sacrificing his credibility by spearheading U.S. Attorney John Durham's ongoing probe into possible misconduct by the intelligence community at the outset of the Russia investigation.
Wild whales can now be weighed with DRONE footage
Scientists can now weigh wild whales using remote-controlled drones hovering above them. In the past it has only been possible to measure the weight of free-living whales if they were dead and out of the water or stranded on a beach. But researchers have released aerial footage of them flying a drone over a mother and baby southern right whale, near Argentina, to work out how much they weigh. They can do this by taking photographs to work out the length, width and height of the animal. This can then be compared to past measurements of the density of that particular species of whale's body, to estimate its volume and weight.
