Back to basics: How this mindset shapes AI decision-making -- Defense Systems
When it comes to future military readiness, 2019 has been the year of artificial intelligence. The Department of Defense launched its AI strategy in February followed by the White House's executive order on "Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence" -- both of which indicate accelerated delivery of AI-enabled capabilities and scaling the technology across DOD while cultivating a much-needed tech workforce. Military leaders recognize AI's potentially seismic impact on their mission and operations, and they expect practical applications to proliferate, from threat monitoring to asset tracking to predictive maintenance. Where, when and how those applications evolve from idea to reality is an unfolding story. So too is the global AI landscape, as Russia, China and other countries make substantial investments in such capabilities.
20191017-2019 The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Public Administration - ASPA National Capital Area Chapter
The increasing use of AI in public administration raises many ethical challenges, not the least of which is ensuring that the decisions made by these systems are consistent with the legal requirements and norms of the field. The National Capital Area Chapter of ASPA will sponsor a discussion on this topic with Professor Pricilla Regan, Professor of Government and Politics at the Schar School of Policy and Government, George Mason University. Dr. Regan recently co-authored a chapter titled, "A Public Administrator's Practical Guide to Ethics and Artificial Intelligence" in The National Academy of Public Administration's study of the impact of AI in the field. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

Even the AI Behind Deepfakes Can't Save Us From Being Duped
Last week Google released several thousand deepfake videos to help researchers build tools that use artificial intelligence to spot altered videos that could spawn political misinformation, corporate sabotage, or cyberbullying. Google's videos could be used to create technology that offers hope of catching deepfakes in much the way spam filters catch email spam. In reality, though, technology will only be part of the solution. That's because deepfakes will most likely improve faster than detection methods, and because human intelligence and expertise will be needed to identify deceptive videos for the foreseeable future. Deepfakes have captured the imagination of politicians, the media, and the public.

I went to UCLA film school, did graduate work in media studies, and early on worked as a development executive at 21st Century Fox. Most weekends I see three or four movies in theaters. Now I work in technology, and I'm witnessing firsthand its transformative effect on the media and entertainment industry. Technology is enabling the democratization of content--access any time, anywhere, on any device--and the impact on media and entertainment company business models and consumer interactions is deep and far-reaching. Recently I spoke with media and entertainment expert Jukka Paajanen, a cloud solution hub senior director at Oracle, about the opportunities and challenges emerging technology presents to the industry.
Facial Recognition Technology in Public Housing Prompts Backlash
This year in Detroit, crews working for the city's public housing authority cut down a row of bushy trees that had shaded the entryways to two public housing units known as Sheridan I and II. Their aim: to give newly installed security cameras an unobstructed view of the hulking, gray edifices, so round-the-clock video footage could be made available to the Detroit Police Department and its new facial recognition software whenever the Detroit Public Housing Commission files a police report. "I think that police departments won't make frivolous claims based solely on technology," said Sandra Henriquez, the commission's executive director. She added, "I think that they will use the technology as one tool that they use in bringing people into the criminal justice system." To critics of the widening reach of facial recognition software, such assurances are likely to ring hollow.
Automatic Classification of Sexual Harassment Cases
In our case, the data was provided by Safecity India, which is a platform launched on 2012, that crowdsources personal stories of sexual harassment and abuse in public spaces [2]. They have collected over 10,000 stories from over 50 cities in India, Kenya, Cameroon, and Nepal. More specifically they provided us a .cvs Additionally to the focal tasks of this project and as part of the NLP channel we decided to automate the category classification based on the sexual harassment case descriptions. Performing this classification task manually is time-consuming and leaving it entirely on the hands of the victim could produce ambiguity in the discrimination of the categories.
