The future of work looks grim for many people. A recent study from Forrester estimated that 10% of U.S. jobs would be automated this year, and another from McKinsey estimates that close to half of all U.S. jobs may be automated in the next decade. The jobs that are likely to be automated are repetitive and routine. They range from reading X-rays (human radiologists may soon have much more limited roles), to truck driving, to stocking a warehouse. While much has been written about the sorts of jobs that are likely to be eliminated, another perspective that has not been examined in as much detail is to ask not which jobs will be eliminated but rather which aspects of surviving jobs will be replaced by machines.

Anyone with an Amazon Web Services account can participate in the league. Teams or individuals can compete online in "virtual" races or in person at events world-wide. Teams build and train AI algorithms using Amazon SageMaker software, deploy them to self-driving cars measuring about 10 inches, then race them around a track of roughly 17 feet by 26 feet. "It's actually having practical applications," said James Rhodes, chief technology officer of investment research firm Morningstar. Thanks to the training, the company expects to have dozens of projects based on reinforcement learning and other machine-learning techniques in deployment by the end of 2020, he said.

Tesla has quietly acquired an artificial intelligence company to build out its Autopilot autonomous driving system. The news was first reported by CNBC, who cited sources claiming Tesla had acquired DeepScale. Tesla did not respond to Fortune's request for comment, and has so far remained quiet on the acquisition's details, but DeepScale CEO Forrest Iandola updated his LinkedIn account on Tuesday, saying that he has joined Tesla's Autopilot team to work on deep learning and autonomous driving. Tesla makes small acquisitions from time to time, but DeepScale appears to be its most significant acquisition since February, when the company announced that it would acquire Maxwell Technologies to improve its battery technology.
