Deepfakes are becoming a bigger issue
Synthetic media generated by AI and represents another dark side of technology and the issue. A deepfake is created by pitting two computer programs against each other -- which are called Generative Adversarial Networks, or GANs. Although this form of Artificial Intelligence has been in the spotlight for the most part of 2019, the biggest news that blew the issue wide open was a LinkedIn user by the name Katie Jones, who appeared on the platform & started connecting with the Who's Who of the political elite in Washington DC. The ease with which deep learning created a real-life image of a person & then penetrated the social media was alarming not just for lawmakers & regulators, but for the general public as well. Lawmakers are especially worried about how this can affect and/or manipulate the 2020 Presidential elections in the U.S. People falling prey to misinformation can greatly jeopardize the transparency of the democratic process.

Researchers agree that unleashing deep-learning models on the vast amounts of data available today has progressed artificial-intelligence capabilities to once unattainable levels. However, deep learning isn't the ideal technique for every application in which AI could provide significant performance gains over what humans could achieve alone. Chooch AI Brings Artificial Intelligence Powered Object Recognition to the Edge - Mobile ID World
Chooch AI has released a new computer vision service that allows users to detect and categorize events in any kind of local video stream. Dubbed Chooch Edge AI, the technology was unveiled at this week's TechCrunch Disrupt startup event in San Francisco and leverages Chooch AI's object recognition capabilities. "Our clients requested a fast, easy to install, complete embedded AI solution many times over," said Chooch AI CEO Emrah Gultekin. "There are locations where connectivity is an issue, and now we can offer detailed inferencing on the edge, with less stress on the overall network." To that end, Chooch Edge AI can be installed on any camera device that meets the minimum hardware requirements, which include Linux, 1GB RAM, and an ARM 32, ARM 64, or Intel x86-64 chip.
Scientists finally create a prosthetic leg that lets amputees FEEL
Scientists have created a prosthetic leg which amputees can really feel. While prosthetic limbs are far more advanced than in the 20th century, their major flaw is that they are not really part of someone's body. Amputees cannot feel them, so are at constant risk of falling, needing to concentrate and must keep an eye on the leg's position at all times. Now researchers have solved the problem, allowing people to feel every time their prosthetic foot hits the ground or knee bends to walk. Their new prosthetic leg does this by sending electrical signals to four electrodes surgically implanted into the tibial nerve in someone's thigh.
UPS receives government approval for drone delivery - beating out Amazon and Alphabet
UPS has become the first drone delivery service to receive full approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. The company's program, called Flight Forward, is operated in partnership with Matternet, which provides drone logistics networking company in Mountain View, California. Previously, UPS's pilots were only allowed to fly the drones within line of sight, but the FAA approval means they'll be able to significantly expand their delivery range. 'This is history in the making, and we aren't done yet,' said David Abney, UPS chief executive officer in a statement. UPS's Flight Forward drone delivery program is the first to earn full approval by the FAA (pictured one of the drones they will use in the program) The program's currently deployed in Raleigh, North Carolina, where UPS's drones have made more than 1,000 flights carrying deliveries around the WakeMed Health & Hospitals campus.

Taking a pay cut in your 30s could put you at risk of memory loss and poor brain function in middle age, research suggests. Scientists assessed how changes in salary affected the brain health of more than 3,000 US adults. The 20-year study began in 1990, and followed the participants through the Great Recession, a period of economic instability across the world. Results showed volunteers whose pay had been slashed at least once over the two decades performed worse on cognitive tests. The French researchers claim the impact of a pay cut on brain health was three times greater than that of one year of natural ageing.

Seattle company is using artificial intelligence to make pizza
In the center of Seattle-based food-tech company Picnic's 8,000-square-foot lab, an automated assembly line consists of a conveyor belt propped upon a metal base. To demonstrate the production, a Picnic worker places a pre-made 16-inch circle of pizza dough into the first module. A form of artificial intelligence (AI) called deep learning uses numerous layers of mathematical formulas to process and assess the size, dimensions and placement of the pizza on the belt, and to adjust the module lighting so a computer-vision camera can properly see it. The pizza chugs along to a series of modules where a small hose evenly squirts tomato sauce over the dough, then a tray dispenses cheese, followed by a spray of pepperoni and ham. The pizza completes its journey through the automated assembly line in a little over a minute. The finished product glistens golden brown when it emerges from the oven.
