With Hopes of Helping Paralyzed Patients Regain Movement, Intel and Brown University Deploy AI Intel Newsroom

#artificialintelligence

What's New: Intel and Brown University today began work on a DARPA-funded Intelligent Spine Interface project that aims to use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to restore movement and bladder control for patients paralyzed by severe spinal cord injuries. "As a Ph.D. student at Brown, I investigated how to interface the brain with machines as an application. Now at Intel, we're combining our AI expertise with Brown University's cutting-edge medical research to help solve a critical medical problem: how to reconnect the brain and spine after a major spinal injury." How It Works: During the two-year program, researchers will record motor and sensory signals from the spinal cord and use artificial neural networks to learn how to stimulate the post-injury site to communicate motor commands. Surgeons at Rhode Island Hospital near Brown University will implant electrode arrays on both ends of a patient's injury site, creating an intelligent bypass to eventually allow the severed nerves to communicate in real time.

You Won't Survive a Merger with AI - Issue 76: Language - Nautilus

#artificialintelligence

The idea that humans should merge with AI is very much in the air these days. It is offered both as a way for humans to avoid being outmoded by AI in the workplace, and as a path to superintelligence and immortality. For instance, Elon Musk recently commented that humans can escape being outmoded by AI by "having some sort of merger of biological intelligence and machine intelligence."1 To this end, he's founded a company, Neuralink. One of its first aims is to develop "neural lace," an injectable mesh that connects the brain directly to computers. Neural lace and other AI-based enhancements are supposed to allow data from your brain to travel wirelessly to one's digital devices or to the cloud, where massive computing power is available.

Intelligent Virtual Assistants: Paving the Way for CX Transformation

#artificialintelligence

How can banks and financial institutions deliver great experiences in the fragmented digital world? Successful financial services firms have reputations and brands that convey trust. Many have embraced digital channels for reaching and engaging clients and prospects and, ultimately, for building relationships with them. But in today's world, true success focuses on the experience--the sum total of offerings, interactions, and transactions. An integrated, programmatic, and highly automated approach offers the best way to accomplish this goal. So: How do you do it?

FDA approves GE's AI-based collapsed lung detection system -

#artificialintelligence

The FDA has approved a mobile chest x-ray system that helps detect pneumothorax โ€“ a type of collapsed lung โ€“ by flagging critical cases for triage. According to the manufacturer, GE Healthcare, Critical Care Suite is the first system of its kind to get approved by the FDA, offering a series of artificial intelligence algorithms embedded on a mobile X-ray device. Pneumothorax, the presence of gas within the pleural space between the lung and chest wall, is a problem in hospitals across the world. But the challenge is to quickly identify real cases from the suspected ones, which can be difficult in busy hospitals. But missing cases of pneumothorax can lead to total lung collapse and other potentially fatal complications, with misdiagnosis or late diagnosis affecting around 74,000 people in the US annually.
