Overcoming the 'Retail Apocalypse'

#artificialintelligence

The retail industry is undergoing a sea change so massive that many industry insiders have termed it the "retail apocalypse." In a sign of this industry upheaval, in 2018 major retailers closed 5,524 stores in the U.S. and 1,432 stores in the U.K., according to figures compiled by the Coresight Research, a firm that studies the retail industry.1 In some good news for the industry, Coresight predicts that 2019 "will not be the year of retail apocalypse or even decline. Instead, it will be a year of reinvention -- for the retail sector as a whole and for physical stores in particular."2 This predicted reinvention of the industry stems in part from the use of sophisticated technology, specifically artificial intelligence.

UPS has won approval to run the first drone delivery airline in the US

#artificialintelligence

It will still be a while before you are able to order drone-delivered packages, however. The news: The Federal Aviation Administration has granted UPS's drone business a Part 135 certification, meaning it is treated as a full-fledged airline, able to operate as many drones in as many locations as it wishes (although there are a lot of obstacles and caveats before that can happen in reality). UPS has dubbed its new drone airline "UPS Flight Forward," and it's the first in the US to gain official recognition. Currently: UPS has been providing a drone delivery service at the WakeMed hospital and campus in Raleigh, North Carolina, since March, moving medical samples around the site about 10 times a day. This new certification means UPS can expand beyond this site.

Delos uses satellite imagery and AI to help homeowners in wildfire areas get insurance โ€“ TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

If your home is in a wildfire area, insurance companies tend to not want to go anywhere near it. But "wildfire areas" tend to be pretty broad. What if companies could evaluate the risk on a more granular level -- tapping things like satellite imagery and machine learning combined with wind, weather and topology data, to better define the riskiest zones? Could more home owners be offered policies, and at more affordable rates? Delos itself doesn't act as the insurer; instead, it acts as a Managing General Agent (or MGA) for a bunch of major carriers.

Using algorithms to build a map of the placenta

#artificialintelligence

The placenta is one of the most vital organs when a woman is pregnant. If it's not working correctly, the consequences can be dire: Children may experience stunted growth and neurological disorders, and their mothers are at increased risk of blood conditions like preeclampsia, which can impair kidney and liver function. Unfortunately, assessing placental health is difficult because of the limited information that can be gleaned from imaging. Traditional ultrasounds are cheap, portable, and easy to perform, but they can't always capture enough detail. This has spurred researchers to explore the potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Artificial Intelligence is the Link Between Big Data and Persons-Level Measurement

#artificialintelligence

Truth in measurement has never been more important than it is today. Therefore, truth is our only agenda. But arriving at that truth has never been more complicated. While many view big data as a panacea for measurement in a digitally rich world, we know it's not that simple. Nielsen's panels have been the foundation of person-level measurement for decades, and they remain so today.

US reopens embassy in Somalia after 28 years

FOX News

Suicide car bomber attacks military airstrip used for U.S. drone mission; reaction and analysis from retired four-star Gen. Jack Keane, Fox News senior strategic analyst. The United States Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia, has reopened after being closed for 28 years, officials said Wednesday. "The reestablishment of Embassy Mogadishu is another step forward in the resumption of regular U.S.-Somali relations, symbolizing the strengthening of U.S.-Somalia relations and advancement of stability, development and peace for Somalia and the region," the embassy said in a statement. The embassy closed on Jan. 5, 1991, after Somalia became engulfed in a civil war and the regime of Siad Barre was overthrown. The United States reestablished a permanent diplomatic presence in Mogadishu back in December, operated out of Nairobi, Kenya.

Google reportedly targeted homeless people with 'dark skin' to improve AI

The Guardian

Facial recognition technology's failures when it comes to accurately identifying people of color have been well documented and much criticized. But an attempt by Google to improve its facial recognition algorithms by collecting data from people with dark skin is raising further concerns about the ethics of the data harvesting. Google has been using subcontracted workers to collect face scans from members of the public in exchange for $5 gift cards, according to a report from the New York Daily News. The face scan collection project had been previously reported, but anonymous sources described unethical and deceptive practices to the Daily News. The subcontracted workers were employed by staffing firm Randstad but directed by Google managers, according to the report.

Can a Board Member's Job Be Automated?

#artificialintelligence

The role of a Non-Executive Director (NED) is to represent and safeguard the long-term interests of shareholders and broader stakeholders, including employees, customers, society, and environment. However, continued advances in artificial intelligence, robotic process automation (RPA), and distributed ledger technology like blockchain could bring about a completely new way for the Board to exercise its responsibilities. Ensuring data veracity could be instantaneous and decentralized, allowing for processes such as reviewing company accounts, financial reporting, and auditing to be real-time and immutable, requiring minimal effort on the part of NEDs. Against this backdrop of change, we applied the methodology in our book Reinventing Jobs to reinvent the role of the NED. First we identified all the key activities performed by NEDs.
