Is AI The Future Of Retail?

#artificialintelligence

In 2018, Amazon announced a chain of convenience stores named Amazon Go, which are partly automated. The stores use several different technologies like computer vision, deep learning algorithms and sensor fusion. The ceilings of the stores are equipped with multiple cameras and the store shelves have weight sensors attached to them. These weight sensors help in the detection of the items taken by a customer and the item is automatically added to the customer's virtual cart. Introduced on January 22nd 2018, Amazon Go has 18 outlets in the United States.

Paralyzed man walks again with brain-controlled exoskeleton

The Japan Times

PARIS – A French man paralyzed in a night club accident can walk again thanks to a brain-controlled exoskeleton in what scientists said Wednesday was a breakthrough providing hope to quadriplegics seeking to regain movement. The patient trained for months, harnessing his brain signals to control a computer-simulated avatar to perform basic movements before using the robot device to walk. Doctors who conducted the trial cautioned that the device is years away from being publicly available but stressed that it had "the potential to improve patients' quality of life and autonomy." The man involved, identified only as Thibault, a 28-year-old from Lyon, said the technology had given him a new lease of life. Four years ago that life changed forever when he fell 12 meters (40 feet) from a balcony while on a night out, severing his spinal chord and leaving him paralyzed from the shoulders down.

Women In AI: IBM's Lisa Amini Takes On AI Security And Reasoning

#artificialintelligence

The rapidly evolving market of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has a rich history dating back to Alan Turing's seminal paper on "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" in the 1950s. The paper was the first to introduce his concept of what is now known as the Turing test, which is a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human. Decades later, the AI market holds many opportunities and unanswered questions. AI promises to improve products, services and jobs. The combination of vast volumes of data and readily available, cost-effective computing has enabled the AI market to grow at a rapid pace in the past decade.

Nature has been an inspiration for many innovations throughout history. Neuroscience and the brain have inspired the development of deep learning theories and applications and led to great performances of artificial vision systems. However, the well- known neuroscience theories have not yet been utilized by artificial vision, not to mention the undiscovered ones. Feature Parallelism Model is widely inspired by nature. It is a vision model that conceptualizes unutilized science facts about the human visual system such as the Feature Integration Theory of visual attention "FIT".

AI In Financial Services: Three Current And Emerging Applications

#artificialintelligence

While the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) is a bit of a mixed bag in a number of industries, we're seeing some exciting traction in financial services. In this month's article, I take a look at some specific examples of where machine learning and AI are helping financial services organizations improve their services, products, and processes. Financial firms and banks are taking advantage of AI to ensure that their employees are meeting complex disclosure requirements. Generally, financial advisors must make sure that their "client advice" documents include proper disclosures to demonstrate that they're working in their client's best interests. These disclosures may cover conflicts of interest, commission structure, cost of credit, own-product recommendations and more.

Six Inevitable Technologies and the Milestones They Unlock - InformationWeek

#artificialintelligence

If we were to go back 50 years in time and demonstrate modern technology to someone, it might appear indistinguishable from magic. To have within the palm of your hand one device that you can use to send instant messages, read books, pay bills, make movies, and even find love would seem unimaginable. Yet this reality has all been made possible by key breakthrough technologies that were revolutionary -- and, some might argue, inevitable. Kevin Kelly, co-founder of Wired magazine, once observed that grand-scale technologies are predictable because they have an inherent direction. He uses the analogy of gravity.

The stockmarket is now run by computers, algorithms and passive managers

#artificialintelligence

FIFTY YEARS ago investing was a distinctly human affair. "People would have to take each other out, and dealers would entertain fund managers, and no one would know what the prices were," says Ray Dalio, who worked on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in the early 1970s before founding Bridgewater Associates, now the world's largest hedge fund. Kenneth Jacobs, the boss of Lazard, an investment bank, remembers using a pocket calculator to analyse figures gleaned from company reports. His older colleagues used slide rules. Even by the 1980s "reading the Wall Street Journal on your way into work, a television on the trading floor and a ticker tape" offered a significant information advantage, recalls one investor. Since then the role humans play in trading has diminished rapidly. In their place have come computers, algorithms and passive managers--institutions which offer an index fund that holds a basket of shares to match the return of the stockmarket, or sectors of it, rather than trying to beat it (see chart 1).

Drone Manufacturers Market Shares: DJI Leads - Drone Industry Insights

Meanwhile, other prominent companies on the Top 10 list include manufacturers like GoPro and 3DR who no longer produce hardware, and hobbyist manufacturers like Holy Stone whose platforms are not suitable replacements for these use cases. Moreover, as many have already noted, it will be difficult for the public sector with its budget limitations to replace DJI drones at the same or even competing price point. Currently it seems like European and American companies are poised to take up the helm, most specifically Parrot. Their Anafi drone appears to already be part of the DoI's'UAS Fleet' which means that they are a likely candidate for the replacements for the 600 DJI drones that would be removed from operations.

Facial recognition is coming to hotels. I stayed at Alibaba's hotel of the future

#artificialintelligence

Along the hallways are refrigerators stocked with drinks and snacks. But unlike most vending machines, customers use the Alipay app to unlock the door of the fridge. When an item is removed, the refrigerator automatically detects what's taken out and the customer is charged within seconds of the fridge door closing. But don't expect to see Alibaba roll out more properties like Flyzoo. The company is using the hotel as a test bed for the technology that it hopes to license to companies such as Marriott International.

Today, terms like Gen-Z and Millennials are the craze words for most businesses world over as they account for more than 60% of the demography. Unsurprisingly, everyone wants to understand what moves them emotionally, physically and financially. Moreover, their communication and consumption behavior is shifting trends and in many cases, causing trends to emerge. One of these trends is that of the Digital lending marketplace where one can avail any kind of loans at the click of a button! Notwithstanding the higher cost of capital, the enticing factors of this digital lending marketplace are bespoke lending products, convenient & quick disbursement and completely paperless transactions.
