Satya Nadella looks to the future with edge computing – TechCrunch
Speaking today at the Microsoft Government Leaders Summit in Washington, DC, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made the case for edge computing, even while pushing the Azure cloud as what he called "the world's computer." While Amazon, Google and other competitors may have something to say about that, marketing hype aside, many companies are still in the midst of transitioning to the cloud. Nadella says the future of computing could actually be at the edge, where computing is done locally before data is then transferred to the cloud for AI and machine learning purposes. What goes around, comes around. But as Nadella sees it, this is not going to be about either edge or cloud.
Can AI Assist in Suicide Prevention?
There is a roughly one-in-five chance an individual will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime. Moreover mental illness can strike anyone -- even popular celebrities such as Ariana Grande, Michael Phelps, and Lady Gaga have spoken of their struggles. Figures from nonprofit organization Mental Health America show the severe depression rate for US youth increased from 5.9 to 8.2 percent over the last five years. For reasons ranging from non-diagnosis to social stigmas, more than half of the 43 million Americans who suffer from some form of depression have received no treatment for their condition. The numbers provide a sobering glimpse of the shortcomings in mental health care, and some researchers are suggesting AI might be able to address the problem.

In this file photo taken on September 12, 2019 the Sony Playstation logo is seen during the Tokyo Game Show. The long-rumored arrival of Sony's next PlayStation has officially been confirmed. On Tuesday, Sony revealed its next video game console, PlayStation 5, will launch during the holiday 2020 season. "These updates may not be a huge surprise, but we wanted to confirm them for our PlayStation fans, as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation," said Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan in a statement. Next year is expected to be a pivotal one for the video game business, with two new video game consoles slated to launch by the holiday season.
GitHub Releases Dataset of Six Million Open-Source Methods for Code Search Research
Regular web search engines like Google may be great for finding a restaurant, but they are lousy for locating a snippet of code. In a bid to help software developers and foster innovative code search research, GitHub last week announced the CodeSearchNet Challenge in a joint effort with California-based machine learning development tools startup Weights & Biases. A large dataset and several baseline models showing the current state of the art in code search have been released to help scientists build models for the challenge. Faced with unsatisfactory code search results from natural language processing engines, researchers have in recent years been applying machine learning techniques to improve their code searches. They quickly realized however that, unlike natural language with GLUE benchmarks, there are currently no standard datasets suitable for evaluating code search processes.
With U.S.-China Tensions Running High, Hopes Dim for Trade War
Beijing sharply rebuked Washington on Tuesday for adding some top Chinese artificial intelligence startups to its trade blacklist, dimming hopes for progress in high-level talks aimed at ending a 15-month trade war between the two economic giants. U.S. and Chinese deputy trade negotiators were due to meet in Washington for a second day of talks on Tuesday, laying the groundwork for the first minister-level meetings in over two months later this week. A report from the South China Morning Post said China had tamped down expectations ahead of the talks scheduled for Thursday with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, saying the Chinese delegation could leave earlier than planned because "there's not too much optimism." The mood soured this week after the U.S. Commerce Department widened its trade blacklist to include 20 Chinese public security bureaus and eight companies including video surveillance firm Hikvision, as well as leaders in facial recognition technology SenseTime Group Ltd and Megvii Technology Ltd.
Getting Executive Buy-In On AI And Emerging Tech
Driving north on the 101 from Silicon Valley to San Francisco, there are dozens of billboards promoting new artificial intelligence (AI) ventures. According to PricewaterhouseCooper and CB Insights (via Bloomberg), venture capitalists poured a record $9.3 billion into AI startups last year, and this is just the beginning. For many business leaders, AI is still a buzzword. This largely stems from an obsessive marketing regime that hypes up technologies like AI, machine learning (ML) and the internet of things (IoT). But behind the billboards and eye-watering funding rounds are industry-disrupting technologies, and understanding their potential impact as well as how to get executive buy-in are pivotal to the future of work. During initial meetings I've had with decision makers, it's been tremendously helpful to demystify AI from the start and translate it into language that aligns with business goals.
NHS launches first marketplace for automations
Public healthcare organisations across the UK have teamed up with the vendor Thoughtonomy to launch the first National Health Service (NHS) marketplace for robotic process automations (RPAs). The project is the brainchild of Darren Atkins, CTO at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT). Atkins spent 18 months working with Thoughtonomy to develop a cloud-based platform that any NHS trust can use to share their existing bots and collaborate on new ones, automating tasks from GP referrals to patient appointment reminders. Read next: How an NHS Trust adopted'virtual workers' to process GP referrals Atkins says this approach allows automated processes to be quickly deployed and will cut costly consultancy companies and other third parties out of the implementation process. All the content on the marketplace is owned by the NHS and can only be used by healthcare organisations for no commercial gain.
MarTech Interview with Ashley Fletcher, VP of Marketing at Adthena
We wanted to better understand CMOs' perceptions around the value of SEM and the strategic role it plays in driving growth for the enterprise. We know that SEM makes up the largest Digital Marketing budget line for CMOs, but globally ROI metrics have dipped – indicating evolving needs for both CMOs and consumers when it comes to this function. If we can understand where their gaps exist, as applied to SEM, we can help the CMO build a stronger Marketing portfolio. As advertisers become more demanding, the cadence with which their data refreshes need to be met is picking up, hence the Search Console updates. However, even with fresher data, this update still doesn't address why something may be happening and how to fix it.
